Hawaii’s fires are another of Nature’s often abstract way of communicating to our species that someday Earth’s inferno may be all that’s left. (Image by L.A.)
Dare To Pay Attention
Time chooses to whisper,
Having endured shouting decades,
A species’ feigned listening,
Maelstrom's obsessive noise-making.
Still persistent
Is but a parade,
A just married tin can raucous
Tied to mankind's bumper.
How tenuous one’s duration.
Yesterday…
Sitting inside time's tree house,
This place of early discoveries,
Where do and don't became but chaff-covered kernels
A slow growing wisdom first heard
Through Daddy’s cheap wine curiosity
Slowly washed away innocence,
Introducing adult fantasies
Through the malaise of unknown tomorrows.
Synchronously, tiny sparrows
Nesting in branches above
Chirped their own hunger pangs,
Awaiting mother and worm.
Below, a squirrel foraging acorns paused,
Looked up and listened to the Now of Nature’s family,
Savored sounds of his own way and means.
Today…
Time awaits the next moment.
As far as the eye can see,
Old roof tops recede,
Conifers hold firm their rightful place
Hosting fowl and predator alike,
Remaining ready to engage the next of reality’s misdeeds,
Endless out-of-control concussion of erosive man,
While the planet's natural system digs in for another encounter.
In duration’s not-too-distant future,
Man’s earth destroying roar
Will hopefully stumble and be swallowed
By the unsullied trees,
Rocks,
And life-consciousness,
Allowing the essence of identity's in-exhaustive patience
To be heard.
Dare listen…
Some will hear desperate existence whisper
The harmonious nocturnes of everything that is,
Even as ignorance and resistance
Remains forever tone deaf.

The handwriting is on the wall, why aren't they reading it. I guess it's beyond the human character to believe anything more than what sociopathic shamans tell them. Throughout the world's history, humankind has blindly gone mad thinking their particular civilization will continue to grow and prosper if only they make the right sacrifices to the gods and annihilate all their enemies with genocide.
The only difference between those bloodthirsty early civilizations, long gone, and today is that we have a worldwide civilization based on the mighty dollar. And everyone, including those entrepreneurs on Maui, are all trying to get a bigger piece of that dollar through exploitation of any kind they can.
Hence, fossil fuels. Still exploiting every corner while knowing that the CO2 from burning fossils was affecting the atmosphere 50 years. Sulfur dioxide is not much of a problem, but methane (natural gas) is. Still they go on like Nero fiddling away while the earth burns.
I meant for my novel fires in The Last Wanderer: The Last Man on Earth, to be a warning, not a prediction. Maui is only the start based on what happened in California last year in Canada this year.
