A family copes with the serious injury sustained by their six-year-old son who was struck in the chest by an arrow. He is now in the hospital, fighting for his little life. (He eventually recovers.)
This is Dwight Pennington. I wrote yesterday about our little son, Jonah Thomas, who is six years old, who was seriously injured the other day when I accidentally struck him in the chest with an arrow.
Our son is still in the hospital, fighting for his little life; and right now, he is in serious to critical condition. Doctors think he will recover, but right now it is too soon to tell. Penny (she's my wife) and myself have been camped out here at Nashville Memorial Hospital, which is the name of the hospital where Jonah is at, and when it is time, we go to the Pediatric Intensive Care Ward to see our little boy. Our little boy is still unconscious (they have him purposely knocked out, so he doesn't pull at the tubes in his small body), and he is breathing with the aid of a respirator, so his lungs can rest (and the one can heal faster; he was hit in the one lung by the arrow). It is very frightening to see our little boy hooked up to machines and monitoring equipment, and naked as he lies so still on the sheets of his hospital bed, but at least he is still alive; and right now, he IS stabile, according to the doctors and nurses assigned to his care. One particular nurse, a tiny, raven-haired Cajun lady with a heavy French-Louisiana twang, has been especially caring; she has kept us up-to-date on Jonah's condition and his chances for recovery.
She has also been concerned about our well-being: she has offered to pray for us and our little Jonah, and she has asked us if we need anything, like coffee or a snack, so we can keep our energy levels up while we are here at the hospital, and she is one of the nicest people we have ever met. She is very good with our son, and her tender concern is evident as she checks his vital signs and provides whatever medical treatment he might need. Her concern and love towards our injured little boy is very comforting and reassuring to us; and we are glad that she is there, helping little Jonah get well.
When we aren't seeing Jonah at the PICU ward, we spend our time either napping, eating, or calling our families, keeping them abreast of the situation regarding Jonah, and it is all very stressful and exhausting; but as long as we have the one nurse there, watching out over him and keeping us informed about Jonah's condition, things somehow seem a little more easier to bear.
Right now, the most important thing to remember is that Jonah's condition has stabilized, and bit by little bit, he IS improving, and doctors ARE optimistic that he WILL fully recover. It could have very easily been a lot worse, and right now we are just grateful that Jonah is ALIVE.
