This story is about Lana Jiao Mai Coleman's little brother, Krithi Raj Seth, who was born in India. The Colemans live in Kennedale, Louisiana.
Krithi (pronounced KRIH-THEE) Raj Seth Coleman is a beautiful little boy: he has a shock of thick, black hair that falls haphazardly in his eyes, a round, brown face, and a dazzling smile. He is only two-and-a-half, and he is just discovering the world about him.
He is also physically disabled. He was born with deformed arms and legs, and he has never been able to walk. He is in a wheelchair, and he is just learning to get around easier. He also has a shunt in his head because of hydrocephalus; and he has some developmental delays. Still, even with his numerous disabilities, little Krithi is a boy who exudes personality, and he isn't the least bit shy, quite unlike his big sister, Lana Jiao Mai, who was adopted from China.
Krithi goes to physical, occupational, and speech therapy three times a week, and he is learning English. He was born in a rural village in southern India, and everything is still decidedly new and foreign to him. He is fascinated with all that he sees, and his huge, black eyes miss very little.
Krithi has only been with the Coleman family for less than a year, and he is slowly getting used to having parents and a sister. He spent all his early years in a hospital because nobody wanted a boy who was physically impaired, and he had only been in the orphanage for a month before he was placed for adoption when a family in America (the Colemans from Kennedale, Louisiana) expressed interest in adopting a little boy with special needs, so their other adopted child, a four-year-old girl from China, could have a little brother.
When he is not in his wheelchair or undergoing medical treatment or therapies, Krithi is like most little boys: he loves movement of any kind, and he loves playing with his toys and being within the love and safety of his new family in America. He has learned that the people who took him in are "Mommy" and "Daddy", and he has since learned to love them and accept them. He also loves his big sister, and they are always together, playing and laughing. They get along quite well with each other, much to the delight of the parents.
He does not like going to the doctor's, as the doctors he has known in his life have hurt him in one way or another, and he has a well-developed fear of needles; getting his shots is always a big ordeal with him, and sometimes he has to be given a mild sedative before he has any "procedure" done to him. He also hates hospitals, and when he had his last surgery, it proved to be quite traumatic, not only for him, but for his family as well.
Besides not liking doctors, hospitals, or needles, Krithi also dislikes cold weather, bees, and "baddogs" (what he calls dogs; he is terrified of them, especially if they are the larger type of dogs). He also doesn't like being left alone in the dark or being left by himself in a room; he always has to be with somebody before he feels comfortable enough.
Krithi is slowly adjusting to his life in America, and from the looks of things, he is slowly, but surely, "making it", and people have since become enamored with this brown-skinned boy, who was born in India, with the wild, black hair and huge, sparkly black eyes. He was once unloved and an orphan; now, here in America, he is, at long last, a part of a loving family who has overlooked his obvious physical handicaps and have accepted him as their newly adopted son.
