Hi,

Let me introduce myself. I am Abigail Harrison, but everyone calls me Abby, including my peers. I make my living as doctor, a gynecologist. That means I specialize in women’s health. I enjoy my job, much for the same reason that any other doctor enjoys their job. I heal people, and comfort them during a time of vulnerability. I also take a very nerve-wracking time, and by my professionalism, am able to make the situation less stressful. Having an exam such as women must every year is not pleasant, but having a capable doctor can make all the difference. I deal with more than just my patients. Like any other doctor, I have to face worried husbands and parents. Every time I do a pap smear on a patient, there is a chance it will come back abnormal, and that could lead to cancer. This risk weighs heavy on the minds of my patients and their families.  I’ve been a doctor for thirty years, and I still get butterflies in my stomach every time I have to tell a patient her a test came back abnormal. That is my least favorite part of my job. I know it must be as hard for someone to hear them, as it is for me to say them. I have had many rewarding experiences in my job, where a woman came to me, having health problems, and I was able to figure out the problem and cure it, but I have some bitter experiences where the condition was not treatable, or discovered too late, and the patient died.
