A story about a little girl who came to a family in Texas from an orphanage in China. Shoshanna Ying Hope Rodriguez is 1 1/2, nearly two years old.
Heard the name in an article about international adoption I read today; thought the name was pretty, so I decided to use it in this story!

Shoshanna Ying Hope Rodriguez looks like any other baby: chubby legs, dumply body, and a pair of the biggest black eyes one can imagine on a human child. She has soft, flyaway black hair and a round, moon face. But she isn't like most, and this is apparent from when people first see her.
But she isn't like most babies; for most of her young life was spent in her native homeland in China in an orphanage. Her parents, wanting a boy, didn't want a girl, so they abandoned her and left her on the steps of an orphanage. She had been there until she was finally cleared for adoption to join a family in America.
She had also been born physically handicapped: she was born without arms or hands.
The family who took her in was a minister and his wife in San Antonio, Texas, and their brood of children who already numbered six before the little girl, then known as Ying Pai, joined them. Hector Rodriguez and his wife, Maria, a Sunday school teacher, had already been well versed in adoption: they adopted four children (Nicole Maria, Carmelita Rosita, Larzo Esteban, and Minka Daniela) after having two of their own, two teenaged boys named Josue' Miguel and Garay Hector. The children were aged from 15 on down to 1 1/2 years.
Until they took in Minka, Larzo, Carmelita, Nicole, and now little Shoshanna, they had never encountered children who had special needs, but when they took in these children, their lives became enriched and blessed ten times over. They showered their love and affection on these broken bodies, and they gave these children hope and healing for their broken spirits and bodies.
Such as in the case of little Ying Pai, now renamed Shoshanna Ying Hope Rodriguez. Ying was a child who had been born without arms, and it was because of this (plus the fact that she had been born a girl) that nobody seemed willing to take her in or take care of her; but then the Rodriguez family in Texas heard of her plight; and they at once started making the necessary preparations in obtaining the needed mounds of paperwork that would get the baby girl to America and to a family she so desperately needed. This was how Ying, now known to one and all as Shoshanna Ying Hope Rodriguez, came to the America and joined a special family that she could now call her own when she got a little older. She was still too young to understand the situation, but she knew that the people she was with loved her, and that satisfied her for the time being, and she was happy to be with them. She was a very happy and good natured baby, and her family was happy to have her in their lives.

This was very sad. I hope this family will give her strength to live a happy life. But I also learnt of artists who paints great painting with their feet. We are all born to this world for a purpose in life.
Let this coming of age story of a boy named Bean take you back to a simple time. Set in a small southern town in the 1960's, encircled by a river and gleaming white cotton fields.
