A young girl offers us her views about what is going on in the world today.
I wish the world was a much nicer place, especially to a kid like me. Or for ANYONE, really!
The world has become a very sad and frightening place--what with all the fighting/wars/violence going on, or the ever-present threat of terrorism, or diseases that are threatening to wipe out mankind, one can't help but to BE concerned (or, in my case, scared).
I am only going on eleven years old (I will be 11 years old next month, on Decmember 25), but what I have seen happening in the world frightens me. I don't sleep at well now, ever since September 11, 2001, happened (I lost a friend in the attacks), and I am so scared that we'll get attacked again. I also don't sleep well because I have JRA (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis), and it seems to hurt worst at night, when I am in bed, or when I first get up in the morning.
I will never forget September 11, 2001, and I don't think other people should either, especially if they lost someone in the attacks, as I did. No, I didn't lose a parent, a brother or sister, an aunt or uncle or cousin, but I still did lose someone just the same, and now, because of terror's evil, I will never see her alive again. My friend's name was Stephanie, and she didn't have to die in the horrible way she did. She died when the one plane crashed into the one Trade Center tower, but it took a few days to find that out. (I thought she died when the Towers fell, but she died when the plane first hit.) To think of it even now still causes me to cry, and I don't like to talk about it because it only brings back memories, and I am still trying to get over the hurt and pain of losing my friend.
I also worry about losing my family. I am so scared I'll lose daddy or maman, or one of my brothers and sisters. I have had bad dreams of family members dying, and it really upsets me. I worry especially about my brother, Johnny, because he has a terminal illness, and he isn't expected to live past the age of 12 years. That is only about a year away, and I can't bear the thought of losing Johnny. Johnny is my very best friend, besides being my brother, and he and I have become very close, closer than the rest of my brothers or sisters. I know we are all saved, and that, when they DO die, they'll go to Heaven and meet Jesus, but I still don't like the thought of them getting sick or dying. Or getting into a horrible car wreck or a plane crash or something. For one thing, I would miss them so much, and I don't think I could ever get over their dying! I would be so sad, and I don't think I would ever be able to smile again!
My friend, Nicole, lost her daddy on Easter of this year, and she and her mom have been having a really hard time; I have tried to be there for her and her mom, but Nicole still can't talk about her daddy without crying. I can't say I blame her; but I wish there was something I could do to make her feel a LITTLE better! It hurts me when she cries! I wish I could take some of her pain away! (Her daddy died in a car wreck; a drunk driver hit her daddy's car, when he was coming home from church, and he was killed. It happened on Easter Sunday.)
I try to comfort myself by singing my favorite songs or by watching a funny show on television ("Rugrats" or "SpongeBob Squarepants"), or by reading, but sometimes I can't help but to think about the world's problems, and it makes me sad. There are people starving and people who don't have clean clothes or even a HOME of their own, or people who are sick with diseases like cancer or AIDS, and if I could, I would send all my money to those poor countries, so the people over there could get clean clothes or food, or even a place to stay or a doctor's care. Like Africa, for example; there are many poor people over there. I would like to go to a place like Africa, so I could give the children over there some of my old books or toys, or tell them about Jesus, or maybe sing to them. I think they would like that if I sang a song to them, especially a song about Jesus and His Love. That would probably make them happy, don't you think??
Maman says I would make a good president, but I am a girl, and I don't think people would want a girl president running the country. All the presidents so far have been men. She says I have a very caring and compassion-filled heart, and she said that I could teach the world a thing or two about kindness and learning to get along. I think being a president would be too hard, and I wouldn't want to be going to those places where there's fighting or violence going on! Nooo, I think I would pass on that...

Yes, I can imagine that there are so many things going on in this crazy world that scare little ones. They need all our help and love and support to grow up in peace, in a feeling of being loved.
Wonderful story.

The World has always been scary. It just seems worst now, because we are all connected through the Internet and media. At one time we only knew what was going on in our backyard. Now we know what is happening everywhere in the world. That is why everyone is so overwelmed at the moment, but I suspec this is part of a healing process that will bring to us the happiness and peace we are all craving. Thank you for the sharing.
Excellent story about the terrors
of evil in the world today Karen!
Ronee has the idea! We should all
think like her, except for the few
women that would run for President,
like ME or my Sister Julie for example!
(grin) Love ya! Becca
