Steffi Sandusky has found out that she has to work on Christmas Day, and she isn't very happy about it.

(I have to work Christmas Day, too, but that is okay; we are only open to four that day, and besides, we also found out that we may be closed next year for Christmas; so this may be the last Christmas I will have to work! :D I also found out that there won't be any breakfast served that day, and last year, we were open from 11 to 8, so my hours will be shorter this year. And maybe I'll make a killing on tips this year! :D It definitely could be a LOT worse...)
I am totally bummed.

I just found out that I have to work ON Christmas Day, and I am NOT happy. My boss asked me if I could work on Christmas, as he said that we would probably be short-handed, so he asked me if I could work. I told him I would; maybe he would pay us time and a half for working on a holiday like Christmas. But inside, while I had agreed to work that day, my mind was giving me the once over: my mind was telling me that I was a crazy fool for volunteering to work on Christmas Day!(This is the first time our restaurant has been open for Christmas, and so I don't know what it will be like. It will probably be dead.)

I told mom about it when I got home from work, and she was surprised. She was surprised to learn that our restaurant would be open on Christmas Day, and all she could do was shake her head and say, "That is totally unethical! Why would ANYONE be open ON Christmas Day?? Nobody is going to be out; you'll probably be slower than slow!" (Huh! I wish she would have known that on Thanksgiving: on Thanksgiving, we got NUKED!! But while I was working my BUTT off that day, the rest of the family was HOME, feasting on turkey and all the trimmings; and all I got was some left over cranberry sauce, cold mashed potatoes with gravy, pumpkin pie, and a little dollop of stuffing! NO turkey whatsoever!! I got gypped out of my turkey on Thanksgiving! They, at least, got to spend the day eating and watching tv and relaxing; me, I was ready to pull out my hair! We had so many parties that day, and we ran out of stuff by the time the day was half over!! And we were supposed to close at four; but the people just kept on coming; and we didn't close UNTIL 7! Oh, it was CRAZY, CRAZY!!)

My brothers and sisters were also disappointed about finding out that I had to work on Christmas; I told them I had to work, and they were worried that Santa Claus wouldn't come because I wouldn't be there; but I told them not to worry; that Santa would come, whether I was there or not! But I could understand: they felt that I was being cheated out of opening Christmas gifts on Christmas morning; so I told them that we would probably open our gifts later that day, after I got home from work, which is probably what will end up happening. I told them that even though I still had to work on Christmas Day, we would still have a Christmas, only it would be later instead of in the morning, as it had been in times past.

I may not know what it is like to work on Christmas Day; but my mom does--she has done it more than once, and she will NOT do it again. She said that she has worked too many Christmas Days being a nurse (to a nurse or someone like that, or to a doctor or policeman, Christmas Day is just another day at the office; and people like them never have days off unless they request the day off or have previous plans); and she says that it is wrong to work on a day that celebrates the Saviour's birth; so she won't do it anymore. Besides, she is the head nurse, so she can have that option of taking Christmas Day off if she so chooses; and she has now had the last two Christmas Days off from work; and is now about to have her third Christmas Day off. She says it is slow for the most part on Christmas Day; but Christmas Day CAN be hard, especially if someone comes in with a bad accident or becomes sick and then dies. That is probably the worst thing about being a nurse on Christmas she says, because even though it is Christmas and it is supposed to be happy, death or sickness still can happen, and Christmas can quickly turn tragic. (Like the Christmas Day three years back, when my little sister, Ronee', had her stroke and nearly died.)

But then I got to thinking about other things about working on Christmas; maybe the customers who came in to eat that day would feel sorry for us, as we were working on Christmas, and so, as a result, they may leave bigger tips or even give us non-servers a surprise; maybe we would end up getting a surprise "gift" or two from the customers. I also thought that they would probably be very happy that we were open, as there were a lot of lonely people in the world, people without a home or families; so maybe our being open will be a GOOD thing.

But even despite all that, I STILL don't relish the thought of working on Christmas Day...
