Corrie Winston, the young girl who is now a paraplegic, fills us in on how she is coping with her new disability.
I have my good days, and I also have my bad days.
Today was a rather hard day for me. I argued with the therapists because they stretched me a little too much, and now I am sore in the areas where I CAN feel. I told them to stop stretching me so much, but they didn't listen, and they told me if I wanted to get out of the wheelchair and start walking with the help of forearm crutches (the therapists called them a different name, but they look like forearm crutches to me!), then all the stretching was necessary.
This is Corrie Michelle Winston again. I am lying here in my bed at the Rehab Center, feeling sorry for myself. I am still angry over what happened to me, and I wonder why my ex boyfriend, Toby, didn't use his head before he got behind the wheel after drinking. I mean, if it were NOT for him, and his stupidity, he wouldn't be dead now, and I wouldn't be lying in some hospital, paralyzed from the waist on down. Now I am going to have to learn to live with being paralyzed for the rest of my life and realize that the life I once knew will never be mine again. This is an awfully hard pill to swallow, and I am NOT having a very easy time of it right now.
My family is at home, and the only time I see my mom and dad or my older brother, Wayne, is when they come to see me at the hospital; but that is only for a few hours each day, and then they have to leave to go back home, so they don't leave my two younger sisters, Minh and Yberra, home by themselves: Minh and Yberra are just little kids, and they need to have parental supervision. And Minh and Yberra are too young to be able to visit me in the hospital; and the only time I can talk to them is when they call me. That is so hard because I really miss them!
My school friends haven't really been by to see me either; the only ones who DO visit me are, as I said, my parents or my brother. I don't know if they are afraid to see me because they are afraid how they may "act" upon seeing me, or they are scared that if they see me, they will somehow become "paralyzed," too. I don't know, but it really has me bummed out big time. The only ones who DO see me are the stupid doctors and nurses, or the therapists, and right now I am so sick and tired of doctors, therapists, and nurses I can just SPIT! Or maybe scream my head off!
Well, I must go now..it's time for me to eat, and I can smell the food on the food cart coming down the hall. I will write more later.
Until the next time, take care, and I will be back as soon as I can!
