This came about from a poem by Kate Clifford about Bigfoot; Kate, thanks for the inspiration!

A youth visiting his uncle in the Great American West has an encounter he would much rather forget.
I still am shaking horribly as I write this in my computer/journal.

The event happened only a few nights past, but I don't ever want to encounter this situation ever again!

Hi. My name is Thad Shane Riechter, and I am 12 years old. I live in Roanoke, Virginia, with my parents, but I am not in Virginia as I write this. I am visiting my uncle Eddie here in the mountains of Utah, where he lives. He lives in a suburb of Salt Lake City, and the reason I am here in Utah is because my uncle broke his back, and I am here, helping him out until he recovers. He is in bed now, and he can't do much of anything, as there is a risk of paralysis; he should be in a hospital, but he absolutely refuses to go; so now I am taking care of him.

Caring for my uncle is a full-time job; and he is growing more and more cantankerous by the minute. Still, he IS unable to do anything so it is MY job to take care of the cabin, my uncle, and whatever else needs done.

Anyway, it was only a few nights ago, and I was outside, getting some wood for the fireplace when I thought I heard footsteps behind me. At first, I thought it was my uncle, but then I remembered about his broken back and his being stuck inside; and then I thought it was one of his neighbors; but the footsteps didn't sound like a human's: these footsteps were very heavy, and very loud; and they shook the ground. As I tried to squint in the darkness, to see what was out there, I was startled to see a brief sighting of something very shaggy--and it was big. Very big; it was way bigger than any human I had ever seen, and it was as though this person/thing was wearing a very thick and shaggy coat. The coat was, if I remember correctly, was dark brown to black, and I also remember that whatever this thing was, it smelled worse than rotting garbage. I don't know what this "thing" was, but it was very big in size: it had to weigh somewhere near 300-400 pounds, at the very least, and it had to be at least 9'-10' tall in height.

My heart started hammering in my throat, and sweat broke out over my entire body as I looked at this thing that was outside; and as I watched, the thing was nosing around the yard, looking for something to eat. The thing then looked my way, and it looked like a very big hairy monkey or gorilla. At first I thought I was seeing things or that my mind was playing a cruel trick on me, but when I blinked a few times, I opened my eyes--and still saw the creature. I was NOT imagining things; and I suddenly grew very scared.

Very slowly, I turned around, and when I got my bearings together, I suddenly started running; and it was while I was running that I heard the heavy sound of giant footsteps behind me; and all of a sudden, I knew that I was toast. The creature was running after me, and he was gaining ground fast. I then tripped on an unseen branch that was sticking off the ground, and I fell heavily to the ground, and I didn't know what to do or think. I figured that the creature was going to eat me or disembowel me or something equally horrible; but I didn't see it anymore. The footsteps that had been behind me suddenly grew silent; and soon, all was quiet again. When I looked around me, I didn't see anything lurking in the shadows; and, breathing a huge sigh of relief, I figured he was gone, but then, I heard the sounds of some heavy breathing in the distance, and then a chilling scream that sounded like a child or a woman in severe pain. I had never heard anything quite like it; and it made my blood turn to ice. The scream sounded like something from the pits of hell: it was totally inhumane, and it had its own built in chill factor; it was a scream that I would probably never forget for the rest of my life. All I could do was lie there and shake in terror as I thought about what I had seen and heard, and I was hoping that whatever it was that I had seen would not come back and eat me or harm me.

The morning after my encounter, I looked about me as I went outside, and I was horrified to see huge footprints covering the ground. I knew instantly that whatever it was was NOT of my imagination, and I was NOT going crazy. I told my uncle about the creature, but he only said that I was schitzoid, and that I had been watching too many horror shows on television. He had heard the noise of the creature outside, but he only said that it was probably a wolf howling; but I knew from the sound of the creature's cry that it was no wolf. I had heard wolves howling in the distance before, and believe me, it was NO wolf!

Great story, Karen.

Great start on your story. I believe these creatures would only attack if they thought they were in danger. They do seem to be very curious about people, but more afraid of them.
