The conclusion of this series of stories about Brendan Michael Kincaid, 11, who is still recovering from a recent bout of bacterial meningitis, as told by his mother, Angel.
My son, Brendan Michael, is a tough little kid; and he has shown his stubborn nature time and time again.
My son is 11 years old, and he is a living and breathing Miracle. He has battled with learning disabilities and autism for most of his young life. He recently had a bout of bacterial meningitis that nearly killed him; and as I write this down in my journal, he is still lying in a hospital bed. He is now awake, but it is not known whether he has sustained brain damage or other damage as a result to the meningitis he had. It is heartbreaking to see him, lying there, hooked up to tubes, and his eyes cloudy and his face blank without expression as he looks at me. He has made really no attempt to smile or cry upon seeing me enter his room, and it really bothers me. He CAN move his limbs, thank goodness, but his movements are slow and jerky, and doctors are wondering if he DOES indeed have brain damage.
I try to be positive, but whenever I see Brendan lying there, looking so helpless and frail, it breaks my heart, and I wonder how in the world am I going to care for him and his needs as he recovers from the meningitis. There is NO telling WHEN he will be released from the hospital; he faces at least several months of rehabilitation and therapy. He may need to use a wheelchair for a while; and the thought of it terrifies me because mentally, I am just NOT ready to accept it, and I am NOT ready to accept the fact that he may permanently disabled as a result of the meningitis.
I worry now because I have two other children, both girls (both younger than Brendan; their names are Tawnya and Megan, and they are seven and nine, respectively), to take care of; and being a single parent, I don't know if I am ready to take on the responsibility of caring for a sick or handicapped child, and the burden is made especially great in knowing that this child is my very own son, our oldest child at 11.
I wish that Kerry, my ex husband, were still with us, but he left; and now I am raising our children on my own; and at times I can't help but to cry because I feel like I don't have a friend in the world; and my parents live so far away in Florida. (I live in Colorado.) I also don't have that many friends, and I am wondering how I am going to endure the coming weeks or months in caring for not only the two girls, but our oldest child who is not at all like himself. I need help, and right now I am so bogged down with worry and fears I don't know where to turn or who to go to for that needed extra help! What do I do now? How am I going to face the coming weeks or months ahead, and what am I going to do when Brendan comes home? He isn't well, and I don't know if I will be able to keep my sanity!
(Will be updating Brendan and Angel's story soon; but this series, for now, has ended. But you will NOT be hearing the last from Brendan and Angel Kincaid!)
