Jenna Aurora Whitson is coming along in her recovery. She is now in the rehab part of the hospital, where she is receiving daily physical and occupational therapies, and the wires are off her jaws. She is starting to eat again, and she is feeling better than she has in months (but still has a long road ahead of her).
Hi! Remember me?
If not, this is Jenna. Jenna Aurora Whitson. If that name doesn't ring a bell with you, I am the one that has been in the hospital since before Thanksgiving, when I got in a bad car wreck that demolished my Volkswagen Beetle and left me pretty much in the same condition. In the wreck, I sustained a broken arm and leg, and also broken jaws (upper AND lower), and I also had to have a tracheotomy performed. I am healing as I write this (I have finally gotten the cast off my arm and the fixator off my leg, and best of all, I got the wires taken off my jaws, so I can eat and move around again; but I am awfully weakened, and I am so skinny, from not being able to eat in YEARS..actually MONTHS, but to me, it's more like YEARS!), but I am not all the way healed yet. I am still pretty sore, and because of it, I am getting to be like a cranky polar bear who hasn't had his winter's nap! LOL
Michael Wayne Doucet (he's my fiance'), the poor dear, has had to put up with my b----y moods lately, and frankly, I DON'T know HOW he puts up with me! I have been rather ugly towards him..well, can you BLAME me?? Try being flat on your back for MONTHS on end, with tubes in you, and see what THAT does to you! Try lying in bed with your mouth wired closed and a big old honkin' CAGE on YOUR busted leg, and see how YOU feel! Well, that's how it has been for ME, and it was NOT fun!! Still, he's been awfully good about it, and he HAS been by my side most of the time; but I am sure that he is tired from being stuck here in Tennessee when he has his job (and his family) back in Shreveport, Louisiana! I am sure he would LOVE to be able to go back home to Shreveport, but because I am here in Tennessee, stuck in some hospital, he has been HERE, with ME, and I think that is awfully sweet of him!
I was on my way to Louisiana, to see Michael and meet his family, when while driving through Tennessee, I wrecked my car. That is why I have been in the hospital up to now; and I am STILL here in the hospital. (Boy, am I NOT looking forward to getting my BILL! YIKES!!) I was almost KILLED in the accident, and it's a wonder I WASN'T! I live in Alaska, in Anchorage, and I had been taking my 2-week vacation from my job back home (I work at a bank), and I was going to go to Louisiana to see Michael when I got hurt in that stupid car wreck. Well, thanks to the wreck, I now no longer have my car (my car is toast), and I was left a (aHEM!) wreck! I spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, AND New Year's in the hospital, and IF I am lucky, I'll be out (FINALLY!) BY Valentine's Day!
Besides Michael, my nurse has been a dear and a Godsend. She is a little dynamo, and she has been with me, through good times and in bad. Her name is Louisiana Sandusky, and she and I have become very good friends. She is really sweet, and she is also very adorable. She is little and pudgy, like me, and she kind of reminds me of a small, dark Dolly Parton! LOL She and her husband, Bill (he is as tall as she is short; I have seen pictures of him, and he is quite taller than she is!), have taken on the responsibility of raising kids with special needs, and they are a beautiful-looking family. (Again, she has shown me pictures of her family.) She is very busy, between working, raising her large brood, and promoting her book, which is entitled "A Family Made Out of Miracles and Rainbows: The Sandusky Family Story-A True Story of Love and International Adoption". It is about her family, and all the stuff she's had to go through in order to get the kids she now has, and it really makes for a very interesting, if very fascinating, story!
I have also met many of the other nurses, but none were as sweet to me as was Louisiana Sandusky!
I really miss my home back in Alaska: I miss the cold and the snow, and I miss my sister, Jerica, and my two nephews, Hudson and Erdene, who are 17 and 13 years old. I also miss my mother, Hilda, who is now in her late 70's and is in pretty good health. I especially miss my job and my co-workers, and I miss the midnight sun and the northern lights, from where I got my middle name. (When I was born, the northern lights were blazing away in the sky, and that year, the lights were very bright.) Alaska is the biggest state in the United States, and to me, the prettiest by far! (But then, I am NOT prejudiced! LOL) I was born in Alaska, and I intend on staying in Alaska until the day I die! Alaska has so much in the way of natural beauty, and natural phenonema, and there isn't anyplace else quite like it!
As you can tell, I am feeling pretty good today. I am getting stronger a little day by day, and now that I am eating and not having to worry about my mouth so much (it is STILL a little sore; eating is still a bit painful, but now it is tolerable!), I can concentrate more on getting better and stronger, and I can concentrate on my therapy and getting back to walking again. I may have to use a crutch or a cane for a while when I DO walk, but at least I will be up on my feet again! It was such a pain being bedfast! (I also have some bedsores on my bum, and I am getting treated for those; and they are finally starting to go away!) I also got the trache-tube taken out of my throat; and now my hole is closing up; but I then will be left with a scar on my neck; it looks like I have been shot! LOL
Well, folks, I have to go to therapy; I can see the therapists flashing the lights, to let me know that they are ready for me (I am deaf; I couldn't hear them if they were outside my door!). Can't wait to see what "fun-filled activities" they have planned for me TODAY! Yesterday, it was standing between two bars on a walker, so I could get used to being on my feet! I was so wobbly legged it was a wonder I didn't just fall on my face! Maybe today I'll use crutches....) Will write more later; but I just wanted to let you know what has been going on with me.
