A young girl thanks her best friend for being there during times of trouble and times of joy.
Dear Ronee':
I am writing this from my heart, to thank you for standing by me in bad times and in good times. You have been there when others have walked off; and you have shown me so much love and support! You've been more than a friend to me; you have been more like a sister, a sister I wish I could have had; but never did.
When I first met you at arthritis camp when I was seven (can you believe it will be five years in August since we first met??), I knew you were something special, and when I first saw you, looking scared and lonely, I knew then that I wanted to be your friend. I am glad that I am not alone in this struggle with chronic pain; I am glad that you understand what I go through because you have JRA too, and you know what pain is all about. Yet you handle your pain beautifully, and it ISN'T often when I DON'T see you smiling. It is when you AREN'T smiling when I know you aren't feeling your best. You walk so much better than me on your crutches, and I wish I could use my crutches more than having to sit in this stupid wheelchair most of the time!
When you were having problems with your knee last year, I felt sorry for you, and I wish I could have taken away some of the pain; but then you had your knee replaced, and ever since the surgery, you get around better than ever, and you seem much happier now.
When you were so sick in the hospital during all the times you had problems with your breathing and then had your stroke, I was so scared that I would lose you; and I don't know what I would have done had you died. I can't imagine my life without you, and you have been my biggest inspiration; and I am glad that we are friends. But then you got better, and now you are doing great; and you don't know HOW much that makes me happy for you! I also love your family; they are so lovable, and they have taken me in under their wing, and they treat me special; and I like that. I wish I could have had some brothers and sisters, but no, Mama only had me. It gets lonely at times being an only kid, but I AM glad that your family likes me. I like them, too.
I was especially glad you were around when I lost my dad last year; it will be a year since my dad died on Easter Sunday; and I am still having a very hard time with his death; but you were there, so I could cry on your shoulder, and you never once called me a baby or told me to "get over it". You let me talk out my feelings, and you also prayed with me; and when you prayed in that weird way that you do, in that other language, I felt at peace, and it was as though God was standing RIGHT THERE, with us, as you prayed, and I felt His Presence; and it really helped a lot. I know I am a Catholic and you are a Pentecostal, but I like the way you pray, and I like the way you pray for others in their time of sorrow or hurt; and I am glad when you pray for me. That really helps a lot, and I know you care because you do that for me, and I really want to let you know just how much that is appreciated by me.
Ronee', I also wanted you to let you know that you have also taught me that even though life can be hard for both of us, you have taught me that there are people who have it so far worse (like your sister, Jodie, or your brother, Johnny), and all of a sudden, our problems DON'T seem so bad; and you have also taught me about the Cajun culture--the language, the food, the music. I like the way you talk in that French accent of yours, and I like the way you sing your French music and play the accordion. I have learned about the Cajuns in knowing you, and I wouldn't mind that the next time you go to Louisiana, maybe I could come along?...(HINT, HINT~)
You have also helped me with my schoolwork, and you are one of the smartest kids I know! I can only speak English; YOU can speak not only English, but French, Spanish, German, and even some Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, and Swahili! I can't even do that! I wish I had your smarts; I really could use them when I have my stupid tests in English or in math! You are also very good with numbers; is there anything in school you AREN'T good at?? (Can I borrow your brains when I have a test in English?? I promise I will give them back to you when I am done with the test! LOL)
You have done so much for me I can't even BEGIN to thank you for all you have done; and I still find it hard to thank you in person. This is why I am writing this note to you now. I only hope that I have been a good friend to you, and that we remain best friends forever and ever! Thank you for all you have done so far; you are THE BEST!
((((HUGS)))) and much love, your "BESTEST" friend in the world, Nicole Michelle Aldape.
