Whew...Franz...what an adventure indeed!
And told beautifully. I have had a few
scary ones in my own life, when I was young
and more adventurous, but not like this one...
way up there in the mountains, on foot. My
"mountain scares" were with wheels under me.
The title fits this piece in many ways. I see at least 3 cans of worms.
You should try going back this time with your more mature perspective and a packet of decontamination tablets for the water. We were always taught to drink from the rapids at the head of a stream as it contains the least amount of parasites and animal wastes. A puddle though, oh boy, you must have been in severe pain. I am surprised you didn't have dysentery for a few weeks after this.
But what of the crystals? Did you ever get to find larger ones or perhaps even something more spectacular?
A great sharing of your trip and the hazards that can happen to spoil the pristine journey. Wonderful story

Thank for sharing this part of your life with us. I felt like I was beside you watching the sunset. So far I have only been on the top of few mountains. My goal is to see a few more :-) I lived in Grande Cache, AB and its half way up Mt. Grande. I have seen the top of this mountain and the silence was hard to walk away from. You can get to the top of that mountain by jeep. My ex literally had to drag me back to the jeep. As you found out not all mountain streams are good for drinking.
