My name is Megan May Lee Sandusky, and I am 9 1/2 years old. I was born in China, near Shanghai, but I was adopted last year and came to America to be with the family I now live with. I came to America with my twin sister, Michelle Breanna.
Our names were originally May Lee and Pu Li, but now we are called Megan and Michelle, and we like our new lives (and our new American-sounding names) very much. We are both learning English, and we are both finding life in America very exciting and interesting.
I and my twin sister were adopted because China has a "one-child per family" rule, and besides, girls aren't really valued that highly in China, so we were put into an orphanage to be adopted. At first, we were both very upset, but then we got used to it; but deep inside, we wanted a family of our own; and this was how we ended up coming to America to be adopted by our family we have now.
Our family is very nice, and our family is also very big. When you see our family you won't believe it until you see us because once you see us, you will probably never forget it! We have 48 brothers and sisters, and mom and dad took in kids from all over the world; and kids of all ages and sizes. Now, my twin sister and I aren't handicapped, but a lot of our brothers and sisters are, and they have a lot of health problems; but they are still very good kids, and we love them all very much. Our mom is a nurse, so she knows how to take care of the kids when they get sick, and she works at a hospital not far from our home; and our dad works at the Wal*Marts store. At his job, he greets people when they go into Wal*Marts, and he really likes his job.
Sometimes we kids fight with one another; but most of the time we get along great. I don't like it though, when the little kids get into my stuff, or when they cry or scream, and I also don't like it when Jodie poops in her diapers because it stinks really bad, and it is embarrassing to have to tell people that Jodie can't go to the bathroom like most kids her age because she has problems. She is retarted (Megan meant "retarded"), and she is very slow to learn new things. I also don't like it when the kids get sick because sometimes big white ambulances come to our house, and it is scary when the emergency guys come into our house with their bags and stuff. They then take the sick kids to the hospital, and I sometimes cry because I hope that they don't die on us. But most of the time, life is good for us and our family.
I go to Eastview Elementary School, and I am in fourth grade. My twin sister, Michelle, and I are in the same class, and our teacher is Mrs. Williams. She is very nice, and we like school a lot. We like learning to speak English better, and we like writing and learning about our world. My best friend at school is Hannie Wilson, and she has brown skin and black eyes and hair, and she is funny. She likes to tell jokes, and she likes to do tricks on the monkeybars during recess. Sometimes it's fun fooling our teacher because Michelle and I look exactly alike, and we like to dress alike. Sometimes our teacher messes up our names; she calls Michelle "Megan" and me "Michelle", and I am always telling her that I am NOT Michelle, but MEGAN!
When I grow up to be a lady, I want to work at a store like Wal*Marts. I want to be a cashier lady and take the people's money when they pay for the things that they buy. I think that would be a fun job. My sister, Michelle, wants to be a writer of books. (Oh, speaking of books, my mommy wrote a book about our family, but I haven't read it yet. Maybe I will one day. My older sister, Ronee', is also writing a book, but she isn't done with it yet. I would like to read that book too when it comes out.)
