A dramory (a short story in dialog)about post WW II rural life - especially a teenage girl
(Beginning Excerpt)
No doubt about it. Saturday nights equaled agony. First my parents and I delivered eggs to a grocery store to trade for coffee, sugar and the like, trudged six blocks to the uptown area, made a ritual tour of the dime stores for Dad's gum drops and ended up in front of the J. C. Penney store to gossip with other farmers.
POST WAR FORTIES
-That Truman's a little pepper pot, carrying on that way about his girl's singing.
-Been thinking about buying one of them freezers. Cousin says fryers taste just like fresh.
-Meat turns dark around the bone. That's what I hear.
-Shame about Ernie Bell's stroke.
-Wife's awanting to put in a bathroom.
-I got my eye on a baler. Make a little money on the side putting up hay and straw for the neighbors.
-Hard work that Ernie. Good man to stack hay in the mow.
-Mandy, you still gonna let that gal of yours come in to town for high school?
-Junction was good enough for our girls. They just get married as soon as they graduate anyway."
KOREAN WAR- EARLY 50'S
-We're giving up the milking. Too many government rules.
-They've even got us washing and weighing the eggs. Durned waste of time.
-Lawmakers ought to have to work for free. They'd stop dreaming up these silly regulations.
-We got no business getting involved in them foreign places.
-Whatcha griping about? You made a pile of money off the last war!
-Where is that Korea place?
-You folks going to the auction on Tuesday?
-Ernie's widow sure didn't waste no time putting the farm up for sale.
-Gonna spend every dime he worked for.
-Well, why not? She outlived him.
-Can you believe old Harry fired a general?
-Things is just changing too fast.
(As usual they found time for the girl.)
-See in the paper where that girl of yourn got straight A's.
-Girl's brains ain't made for book learning.
-Too smart means strange.
-Oughta wear more color, dearie.
-Smile at them boys.
-Better grab one before they's only
leftovers.
-And best leave that chocolate alone.
-They've got creams for them pimples.
-And you hear about them rubber girdles. Really hold in the tum-tum.
