A girl living in West Virginia updates us on her life.
Hi! This is Aurora Lee Mendelssohn writing! Remember me??
If not, I wrote earlier, tellin' you about myself and my life. I will be 13 years old on Christmas Eve; I was born on in 1991. I have three younger sisters (Emily-Jane--10 1/2--, Cole Marie--she's really Nicole Marie, but we call her Cole; we allus have; she is fixin' to be nine in a few weeks, in June--, and Spring Rain, who just turned seven in April), and two little baby brothers, Dalton Kage (4 1/2), and Jebbie Peter, who will be 3 in July. We live in Parkersburg, West Virginia, with our Nonna and PawPaw Hendershott. Our folks died in a car wreck one year ago, and we still miss them terrible. The little kids don't really remember them much, but Emmy, Nicole, and I do, and we miss them fiercely! In addition to all the above people in my family, I also have a brown and white goat named Tinka, and she is really sweet. She sleeps outside, but when it is rainy or cold out, she sleeps with me, in my bed. I have had her since I was little, and she is a cutie! She may be a goat, but I swear upon a whole stack of Bibles that she must think she is part dog because she follows me everywhere I go! It's really cute!!
I am in the sixth grade at Eaton Elementary, and my teacher is Miss Penny (her last name is Washington, but she tells us kids to call her Miss Penny); she is really sweet, and I am glad to say I do really good in school. I am one of the best readers in the class, and teacher is always so proud of me. I love school, but I don't like dealing with that stupid Dade Crockett; he is allus tellin' folks that we are boyfriend and girlfriend, and I can't STAND him! He is such a dolt, and he don't know anythin' 'cept how to stir up trouble!!
My best friend is Tallulah Cole. She is younger than me; she will be 12 in November, and she is really nice. I have been friends with Tallie for a year, and she and I sometimes go across the holler and spend Friday nights at each other's houses. We also like to play dolls or swing on the swings or go swimming in the creek.
I have been doing pretty good, just enjoyin' life and writin' in my journal; and I also have been workin' on my drawings. I want to become an artist, and I would also like to write a children's book and illustrate the pictures. Miss Penny and my grandfolks all say I am a budding young artist, and they think I do good in my drawings. I have always loved to draw, and I can copy stuff from magazines or books. Drawing pictures has always been very easy for me.
The only bad thing that has happened so far was when little Sarey Lou Ridenour drownded in the creek up a ways from us; I happened to be near her when I saw her go in the water; and I had to rescue her; and when I got her out, she was blue and limp. I got so scared. I called the paramedics, and by the time they come, they were too late; for little Sarey Lou was dead. It was a bad time, and I still have nightmares of seeing her little blue body lyin' on the bank by the creek and seeing the paramedics tryin' to get her going again; but they couldn't. It was a really bad time for her family and for me, as I was the one who had tried to save her, but it was too late by the time I got to her to where I could pull her out.
I also got into trouble for punchin' out Dade Crockett in the snout. He was a pickin' on me, like he always does, and he was also saying some snide things about Loretta Lynn, and I got fed up, and I let him have it in the snout. I got to go to the principal's office for that one, and I was so scared and upset when Principal Batton called my grandfolks and tole them what I had done; and then when they come, I got a good a talkin' to, and I was grounded for the entire weekend. But other than those two things, my life has been good!
you create living, breathing persons in your writes--you can hear them talking to you--this is the hallmark of a truly gifted writer--BRAVA! well done!
It's almost Christmas. Lynn Basil is writing her last book about a secret entrance into the magical doll land of Sha Bebe that she loves so much. Bagannos have taken over the world! Lynn finally meets her dolls in real life. Can she write in a Secret
