Why we need to be thankful that we are living in the Land of the Free this Memorial Day..and EVERY day! :)
We are a much blessed nation, America; we Americans should be grateful for each and every blessing that God has bestowed upon us.
Although we have had many problems in the past (and still face seemingly insurmountable problems now, what with the threat of terror attacks against our people and country, the ongoing war in Iraq, the poor treatment of our veterans, the ever rising prices of just about everything, the ever widening gap between the rich and poor, and the deterioation of our cities and towns, among others that plague our nation), we have managed to survive disasters beyond imagination (September 11, 2001, the two World Wars, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, the Civil War, the assasinations of Presidents, the attempted assasination of other leaders, the Columbia and Challenger shuttle disasters, the turbulent 60's, and the Great Depression in the 30's, are prime examples that immediately come to mind), and we have continued to try to go on after these disasters with an unbreakable, unshakable spirit. We have proved to the world that no matter who (or what) threatens to destroy us, we will emerge victorious and stronger than ever!
I was born here in America, as was my husband. I was born in Cajun Louisiana, and my husband, in North Carolina, and we have taken in kids from not only America, but all over the world; it is because of our love and our adopting them that they have since been indocrinated into American society and have learned American ideals and beliefs. They may look different, or act or talk different than you may, but they are still Americans, and they have the naturalization papers to prove that claim. Our kids make up a patchwork quilt of nations: Korea, Vietnam, Russia, France, Holland, Japan, Iran, Germany, Bosnia-Hergozovina, Mexico and Latin America, and also the Americas (the United States and Canada). But they are now naturalized citizens of our great land and all have since developed a love and appreciation for our country and all that it stands for.
Our kids have also persevered over incredible odds and they have proven to people that even though they may have special needs, they are still kids, and they will set out to accomplish whatever dreams they may have. For example, our son, Johnny, who is dying, wants to live as long as he possibly can and he will continue to live life to the fullest and teach people in the process. My daughter, Ronee', wants to be a country singer. She has a beautiful, God-given soprano voice and she has blessed people with her singing and musical abilities.
Now, we may have our problems, but we have a President who isn't afraid to share his Christian faith (something that I feel is severely lacking in the country today; we have managed to push God aside), and we have a strong military force that is going through some tough times now, what with the ever-rising death toll in Iraq or all over the world. But we won't be deterred in trying to protect our freedom or our way of life, and we will defeat the enemy called terrorism and show these terrorists that they have managed to mess with a very angry and powerful nation! We also share a common heritage in our forefathers, and in our people before us who came from other lands to pursue the "American Dream" and make life better for them and their loved ones. We also share a choice in religion (here, you will find not only Christians, but also Muslims, Buddhists, Hari-Krishnas, athiests, Mormons, and even "new agers" among our people), and we can strive to be whatever our hearts or minds want us to be. One can choose to be a nurse (such as I am; I have had this dream since I was a small child), a doctor, a teacher, a physicist, a scientist, an astronaut or pilot, a military person, a policeman (or women), a firefighter, or even an entertainer in showbiz. Nobody can tell us what we can or can't do--it's our choice, as free Americans!
Yes, we are happy to be here in America, and every day, I teach my kids to appreciate all that America has to offer, and when we go on trips, it is always an ongoing learning experience.
We have been from shore to shore, and we have seen a lot of what America has to offer, and each area is so different, yet, our people are somehow connected by some invisible threads of pride and freedom.
On this Memorial Day, I am grateful more than ever to be an American by birth and I will continue to support our Nation, our military men and women, and our President.
