A little boy with neurological problems is a joy to his family, who dote on him.
My son, Akilino, is a little Miracle. He is three years old, just a little boy, but already he has brought our family such joy and hope in the midst of impossible odds.
Little Akilino is really named Akilino Waleni, but we call him Kee or Aki. His name is bigger than he is! LOL He was flown from Hawai'i when he was several months old to be adopted, and he has been our little guy since he was about a year old. He has straight, silky black hair and eyes, and he has beautiful, naturally tan skin that only turns darker in the sun.
He also has serious neurological deficits. He was born with them, and he has a lot of physical problems. He can't walk, and he is in a wheelchair; and he also can't talk very well. He just says a few words, and when he does talk, his speech is hard to understand. He may have some deafness, but so far, this hasn't been proven. Still, it is heartbreaking to see him struggling to move, something the rest of us seem to take for granted, and it is upsetting to see him sitting in his little purple wheelchair, strapped into place, so he doesn't fall out and hit his head or hurt himself somehow. He has bi-weekly physical, speech, and occupational therapies; and he also has to see his pediatrician every few months, just so he can keep an eye on his development and see how he is progressing.
He is still a cheerful little boy other than his physical or neurological problems; and he loves to laugh or have a good time. He loves to go to the park with the family, and he loves playing with his two older sisters, Leilani Michelle and Aloha Grace, who are also adopted from Hawai'i. Leilani is six, and Aloha is seven; and they dote on their little brother fiercely. We tried to have kids of our own, but we couldn't; so this was why we adopted the girls and also Kee. The kids have been nothing but a joy to us, and having Akilino has only strengthened our family unit. Through Akilino, we have learned about tolerance of the disabled, and we have learned that even though he may have obvious physical and neurological needs, he is still a happy, loving little boy whose greatest joy in life is to laugh or to make others smile.
