Two boys share a special bond as only best friends can do.
I have been so lucky in finding a friend like Jose' Varquez. He has been my support, my buddy, and an all around good guy.
This is Johnny. Johnny Sandusky. I am having fun this summer, and I have been spending a lot of time with Jose', who so happens to be my best friend!
I first met Jose' when he came up to me when I was feeling sorry for myself one day, and we managed to hit it off. He didn't care one bit that I was in a wheelchair or wore braces on my legs, or the fact that I was wearing glasses and hearing aids in my ears: all HE cared about was that I was a very lonely little boy, and I needed a friend!
Jose' is a cool kid. He has a hot baseball card collection, and he and I spend a lot of happy afternoons just going through them and swapping them, and we also play video games and watch "SpongeBob SquarePants" together. He can do backflips on his trampoline in his yard (I can't even do THAT! For one thing, I would break my fool neck, and I am ALREADY in a wheelchair NOW!), and he can do birdcalls that would fool a cat or another bird. His specialty are owls; he can hoot just like an owl, and it is hilarious! Every time he hoots, I just LOSE it!
The only bad thing about Jose' is that he can't come to camp with me in August. He goes for a week to Texas, his former home, to visit relatives, and he goes around his birthday, which is on August 12. He will be 12 then, so he is a little over four months older than me. My birthday isn't until December, December 26, as a matter of fact. I go to muscular dystrophy camp every August for a week, and it is a total blast, but it sure would be a lot better if Jose' were there! I miss him when he is in Texas and I am at muscular dystrophy camp!
He likes my family; he thinks they are cool (which they ARE!). He wishes he had brothers and sisters like I do; but he only has his abuelo and abuela to take care of him. (Abuelo is grandfather in Spanish, and abuela is grandmother in Spanish. He taught me that. He is teaching me new Spanish words, and so far I can count up to 20 in Spanish, and I also can say the words for table, mother and father, brother and sister, aunt and uncle, pet members, and colors. He says I am doing well, and pretty soon, he says I will be able to speak Spanish almost as well as a Spanish person!) I like his abuelo and abuela too; they are always very sweet to me, and I like that they treat me normally, even though I am in a wheelchair and can't walk without crutches or leg braces. They treat me like a normal kid, and that is a lot better than what most people do whenever they see me.
I don't know what I would do without a friend like Jose' Varquez. He is certainly one of a kind, and I am glad that we are friends! My life would be a lot sadder, that is for DARN sure!
