Not all emergency calls are fraught with sadness..sometimes there is room for miracles happening.
A lot of the times, our calls that we make for people in need are filled with incredible suffering or sadness; but there are times where a call ends up becoming totally unexpected and out of the ordinary, and there are some things that still can't be explained.
One of the happiest events we ever received was when a little girl, who had suffered a sudden, premature stroke, recovered, and now, at the age of 11, she is a little living Miracle. Every time I see this particular child my heart fills with joy, and my eyes fill with tears because I remember her lying there, on the floor of the kitchen at her house, blue, limp, and unresponsive, and now I see her walking, talking, and doing all things that normal eleven-and-a-half-year-old girls should be doing: laughing, hanging out with her family or friends, yakking it up on the telephone, going to concerts, spending time playing or engaging in favorite activities, and just enjoying life in general. When there was no hope for the little girl, God somehow intervened, and He spared her life and allowed her to live and recover with very few effects leftover as a result of the stroke she had suffered.
I also see her brother, a thin, pale lad with wispy blonde hair sitting in his wheelchair, enjoying life, and I can't remember how many times we have had to make calls on account of the little fellow; yet, despite the urgency of the situations he encountered, God again intervened, and He allowed this little guy to live and enjoy another day. He like his sister beat the odds, and he is still amazing people today each and every time they see him.
I don't know why God allows some people to live, or others to die; but He must have a reason. I have seen people who were expected to recover crash and burn right in front of our eyes, and it takes all of our manpower and skill to save their lives (often we are unsuccessful), and yet, on the other side of the coin, there are people who are at death's door, and all hope seems lost, and somehow, God pulls them out of their crisis, and they recover with few or little aftereffects. These kids who have serious illnesses or disabilities are a prime example of this, and as tragic a lot of these kids are, or their stories, they somehow manage to live out their lives to the very fullest, and they are happy kids who have a Purpose in life and manage to touch all who meet them.
Johnny Sandusky and his sister, Ronee' Reaux, are two such examples. They both live with serious physical disabilities each and every day that tests their faith, their courage, and their ability to negotiate throughout life, but they meet each challenge, each obstacle, with the tenacity of a prizewiining fighter, and they do not know the meaning of the word "Quit". They both live out their lives with a sense of grace and willpower, and they are a living testimony of God's Healing Grace and Power. Through them, people learn of God and His Message, and they learn that even though they may have health concerns or serious disabilities, they are people first and foremost, and they have shown people that if given a chance, they can succeed at life too.
I have never met two sweeter, two kinder children, and each time a call involving them goes out, I pray like I have never prayed before, and I have all my friends pray for these two little Miracles; and it is evident that God is listening because the two children are still here, surprising everyone, and God must have big plans ahead for these two. If He didn't, they would both have died long ago, and they wouldn't be here today.
But there are many more Miracle stories than just besides Johnny Sandusky or Ronee' Reaux: M'Buti Moore-Sormiento, a woman in her middle 20's, is another example of surviving over incredible odds. She has survived burns to her lower limbs, heart or respiratory crises, overwhelming infections (including a round with the flesh-eating bug), and emotional trauma brought on by the deaths of her parents, her past hospitalizations and coping with severe, unending pain, and being raped; and she is still around, where she is now working part time at a local newspaper company, and raising a family of three children all under the age of seven, two of them twins. She and her husband, Roberto, have been happily married for six years now, and right now, life for all the Sormientos is looking mighty good, indeed.
We have had to make calls for M'Buti, too, and like Ronee' and Johnny mentioned earlier, we have had to fight tooth and nail, to make sure that M'Buti had a chance at survival, and by some Divine Intervention on the Lord's behalf, He let M'Buti live, and now, M'Buti is another example of God's Awesome Power and Mercy.
It is because of people like M'Buti, Johnny, and Ronee' that being a paramedic is worth all the stress, suffering, and pain because even though there are people who are in need of our services, they end up recovering, and even though they are suffering at first, they come through the crisis with flying colors, and they are made stronger and more whole, and they now enjoy life to its very fullest. It is because of calls that end successfully that I gave my life to Christ because I saw that He was in control, and that without Him, there is no hope, no future, or no chance. Somehow Christ and Miracles go hand in hand together, and one can't function without the other. And there must be a Reason He allows people like Johnny, Ronee', or M'Buti to live over impossible odds; there is no other way that I can explain it. But I will let you know this much: it has only made my job more sweeter, and these are the times where I am especially glad to be able to help people when they are most in need because there are times where nothing but good comes out of it, and to know that you have helped someone is very satisfying indeed!
