An update from Fahid Al Mahood, the woman who had been horribly burned by her husband, and how she is doing. She is still deeply depressed, and is scared about her future and the future of that of her little boy, who is now back with her.
Hello! This is Fahid Al Mahood.

I am sorry if I have not written in a long while, but my days are still colored with much pain and suffering. I am reminded every day of my fate whenever I look in a mirror, and see how ugly I am. I still carry the burden of scars on my face, and I still suffer from great pain; and times are still hard for me.

I do not go out of the house but to go to doctor's appointments, and I still feel like the world is staring at me; and it makes me uncomfortable. But I do finally have my son, Amir, Jr., back, and he is growing up. He is now three, but he looks to be four or five. He is tall like his father, and he looks like him, too, but he is more like me in personality. He is quiet, shy, and doesn't say much around strangers. He is a very smart little boy, and he is the only thing in my life that brings me joy now.

I no longer go to mosque for prayer; again, I feel people may stare, and I am afraid that they will say hurtful things to me, and I don't want to subject myself to that again. I stay holed up in my house, where I read the Q'uaran and pray in the privacy of my own home, and I also am teaching my son of the Islamic religion. But I am torn as to what to believe any more: people are always saying bad things about the Muslim people or the Islamic religion, and they don't understand much about it. They think we are all terrorists or bad people, and that makes me cry inside. I am not a bad person: I have always been for peace and harmony, and I don't like violence in any shape or form! I wasn't the one who attacked America back on September 11, 2001; why, then, must they say things or tell me to go back to where I come from whenever they see me??

My husband, Amir, is still in prison; he has been charged in trying to kill me, and so he will be in jail for a very long time. I hope he stays there; he doesn't deserve to be free, not after what he did to me! Because of him I am no longer beautiful. Because of him, I feel I am less of a woman and more of a burden to society. Because of him I have scars running down my face and neck, and every time I look at myself in a mirror, I am slapped with the horrible realization that my husband--MY husband, mind you!--did this to me, and because of it, my life has been changed forever, and I am no longer the same person, nor will I ever be again! I will always be an ugly monster, and I no longer like myself or what has happened!

I still see my little nurse friend, Louisiana Sandusky, who took care of me when I was in hospital, and she sometimes brings me books to read or food to eat. She is always sweet to me, and she is the only person I trust. She has fallen in love with my son, and she sometimes brings him toys or picture books to look at, and she delights in his laughter. Louisiana doesn't care that I am a Muslim: she sees me as a lady who needs a friend, and she is the only person I feel comfortable with. She never says anything bad about my face or my scars, and she knows that it is difficult for me to talk about what has happened, so she got me a journal, and she suggested that I start writing, as a way to help me to start healing. So I am willing to try it, for her sake, and also mine.

Anything has got to be better than living in fear all of the time; this is NO way to live! I am tired of being afraid!!

Until later, this is Fahid signing off. I will write again soon whenever the mood strikes me. Until later, so long!

~Sincerely yours, Fahid Al Mahood, burn survivor.
