A young boy battles disability on a daily basis, but he remains upbeat and optimistic and is a delight to all around him.
Emmett Dushayne Evans is a little Miracle. He should have died when he was born seven years ago, but he is still continuing to beat the odds over and over again, amazing both his doctors and his (adoptive) family.
Emmett was born four months premature, weighing 11.5 ounces, less than a bottle of soda when he was born; and he was only 15" long, just barely longer than a yardstick. Yet, despite his tiny beginnings and his uncertain future, the little boy battled many medical problems, and now, at the age of seven, he is still thriving, thanks to the love and support of a caring and close-knit family and a circle of friends.
Emmett, called "Bubba" by his family and his friends, is a beautiful little boy, with a headful of wiry, black hair done in an Afro, huge, bright-black eyes, and a round face that lights up whenever he smiles. He is in a wheelchair because he has cerebral palsy and some brain damage, but this hasn't daunted his spirit or his personality. He is a very happy, jovial little boy, and he lives life to the very fullest. Among his favorite things to do is go horseback riding, as part of his physical therapy sessions, play baseball on a team for disabled kids, play on the computer, play video games, watch TV (his favorite tv show is "SpongeBob SquarePants"), go to church every week (he attends Christ Community Assembly of God Church), sing (he is in the children's choir at church), and go on vacations with his family. He is the youngest of five kids: besides Emmett, there's also Erica Lyne'a (9), Kim Richelle (10), Wren Carolina (13), and the oldest at 16, Paul Matthew. Like his brother and sisters, little Emmett is adopted. He was adopted from Georgia when he was two, and he has brought joy and hope to his family ever since. The other children came from places like Vietnam (Kim, Erica, and Paul) and India (Wren). But despite their differences in language, cultural background, or appearance, they are now brothers and sisters through adoption, and they have since become very close to one another.
Many people, upon seeing Emmett, feel sorry for him because he is in a wheelchair, but as Emmett says, "I don't feel sorry for me; why should people feel sorry for me? I may be in a wheelchair, but I am a kid, and God made me the way I am for a reason!" He is very gung-ho about his Christian faith, and he isn't afraid to tell people that he IS a Christian. He loves his church family and going to church each and every week; to him, it is one of the biggest highlights of his week. He has already decided what he wants to be when he is older: he wants to be either a teacher or a gospel singer, like his favorite, Donnie McClurken. Oh, yeah...and maybe a preacher man, just like his pastor as his church, Pastor Bruce Bilkey.
Aww, what a great piece. I feel that the story is about me, even though I wasn't born prematurely...but I have battled a lot with life, and I almost died several times. Your writing shows many reasons to be happy in life. Keep up the great work!
