Ouija Board Antics

Go Terribly Wrong

      As I have already warned, playing with a Ouija Board is bad news. You just don’t know what dust you’re kicking up in the spirit world. In Jamie Nauss’ case, he really wished he hadn’t fooled with a board like this and soon realized it was much more than just a game.

       Jamie, 33, was not anxious to tell his amazing tale, but after some coaching, he agreed to an interview. It was as if by telling his story, he might just let old ghosts out of the closet. Settling in at my small apartment, he began by setting the scene. Fifteen years ago, he was renting a trailer with his friend Edward, in a dense wooded area of Italy Cross, otherwise known as Crouse’s Settlement in Nova Scotia, Canada. The trailer was quite large, but also very secluded at the end of a long dirt road. At night, it was quiet and completely dark, except for God’s natural creations.

       “At night, you couldn’t even see any lights from the road.”

        Jamie admitted that he used to be quite a party guy when he was 18 and on weekends, the trailer was full of friends. One chilly Saturday night in November, one of those parties was in full progress. Aside from Jamie and Edward, there was Edward’s girlfriend Kim, Jamie and two other friends, David and Mark. Little did he know that that night would be the beginning of a string of events that he could never predict.

       “Kim had a Ouija Board. It was not the store bought kind. It was old and made of wood with special designs.”

       When they began to play, some argued that others were pushing the pointer. Eventually they got the hang of it. However, because they’d been drinking, the session soon got out of control.

       “They were all asking questions at once. We were asking it dumb questions. Sometimes it would spell out words.”

        All of a sudden, the pointer raced across the table to “Goodbye” and flew about five feet across the room. This led to another argument over those participants who just wanted to fool around.  Kim decided it might be best to just put the game away. A few days passed and Jamie entirely forgotten about the incident. He soon got a rude awakening. Jamie had to get up for work in the morning, so he went to Edward’s bedroom to set the alarm. It was a red LED screen clock that could be easily read. Jamie was just inches from the buttons when the numbers started to roll.

     “I got close to it and could see the digits racing backwards. It freaked me out. I pulled my finger away and the clock said 11:40.”

      He can’t remember if the clock read a.m. or p.m., or if the old clock even displayed the difference. It’s quite likely that it didn’t. Anyway, Jamie tried several times to set the alarm, but the moment he got near it, the same thing happened. The time always stopped at 11:40. Jamie gave up and called Edward to join him.

       “I went to show him what happened and it did the same thing, but this time, it stopped at 12:30.”

       “I asked Edward to leave the room. It did it again and it stopped at 11:40.” Jamie tried several more times to set that darn clock, but it just would not cooperate with him and it always rolled around to 11:40.”

      Finally Edward, who was more perturbed with Jamie than anything else, set the clock and told him to keep his hands off it.

       The following Saturday, Edward had gone to his parents, so Jamie was alone in the trailer. He decided to just relax, have a hot coffee and wait for his friend Dale to arrive. Glancing at a wall clock, he noticed that it said 11:40 a.m.

       “I looked at my watch and it was quarter to 10.”

       He immediately changed the clock to the right time and went into the kitchen to prepare his coffee. When he returned, the clock had reverted back to 11:40a.m. He was quite shaken by this and decided he wasn’t going to touch that clock either. Soon Dale arrived. Jamie looked at his watch and it was 12:30 p.m. He really began to wonder what was happening and what the numbers meant, if anything.  To this day, he still can’t figure it out.

     “I can’t forget those numbers. I always look at my watch when something happens.”

       However, this is not the end of the tale. When Edward returned, Jamie told him about the wall clock incident.

       “We’ve got a ghost, man,” Edward said. “Let’s call him Alex.”

       Dale laughed out loud and told them he wasn’t buying any of it. The next evening when David stopped by, Jamie told him about the clocks’ unusual behavior. Right away, he suggested they hold a séance. Mark also arrived, so the four of them sat on David’s bed in a circle. They lit a candle and set it in the middle of them. They began by holding hands and summonsing Alex to join them. At that moment, Jamie blacked out.

       “When I came to, Mark was over by the door and he looked white as a ghost.”

       Apparently, Mark needed to go to the bathroom and had broken the hands and the circle. They asked Jamie if he was all right, but they were more concerned about what had occurred while he was out.

       Mark asked Jamie, “Where did that voice come from?”

       While Jamie was “gone,” a deep, creepy voice had emerged from him saying to Mark, “Don’t go. Don’t go,” just as he approached the doorway. Again, Jamie was stunned by the turn of events.

       The following week passed without incident, but the next Saturday would break the silence. There had been a party as usual and most of Jamie’s friends just stayed over and slept on the floor. \

       Kim had brought along the video “Witchboard,” so Jamie, David and Dale, who were the only ones awake, decided to watch it. About half way through the movie, Dale arose to go to the bathroom.

      “Dale was leaving the room and gets to the corner heading to the bathroom. He took his first step down the hall and heard boom, boom, boom.”

       Dale ran back to the living room looking totally terrified.

       “I almost died laughing,” Jamie said.

       David and Jamie had only heard one “boom” and wondered what all the fuss was about. But Dale was so unnerved that he gathered his coat, boots and other belongings and left immediately.

       “I never did see him again.”

       Jamie had quite a chuckle over this incident. He decided to turn off all the lights and put the movie back on. Then one of the girls, who had been sleeping awoke and noticed dancing, green lights up in one corner of the room. It was near the window, so Jamie went over to see if any light was coming through it. There was not, but the green orbs continued to move back and forth for about 20 minutes. This convinced the girls, who were all awake by then, the trailer was not a place they wanted to be.
