Like miniature daggers, the gusts of a frigid wind penetrated his field jacket, numbing him. He knew that some of the cold he was enduring was self-inflicted from his fear of seeing the names in the black granite. The time was 3:30 AM as he walked down to the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial for the first time. He had come here to pay his respects to the men who died thirty-five years ago.
Major General Edgar Stone had just ended his army career on Christmas Eve. He was a bitter, lonely man. The general lost his faith in God after losing his men. Because of his bitterness, he had never been able to sustain a long-term relationship with the women he had met.
As he approached ‘The Wall’, the larger and tighter the knot in his stomach became. The cold fear that comes with facing one’s guilt was now sharper than the chill stabbing his body. Each step brought him closer to a rendezvous with the past and the feeling was very disconcerting.
He was quite depressed, but then again, he always felt that way this time of the year.
General Stone hated Christmas nearly as much as Ebenezer Scrooge did in ‘A Christmas Carol’. So many versions of that story had been made over the years, but the message was always the same-a disdain for the season. He had seen them all but he could never believe the happy endings.
