Stephanie, aged 16 1/2, writes about working on Christmas Day and what she got for Christmas, in terms of gifts.
Oh, how I wish I could have been off this past Saturday...but noooo...everyone who was scheduled that day had to work; if they didn't, they were to be terminated (bosses' orders). So I had no choice in the matter, really.
By the way, I work at Golden Corral, which is a buffet/family sit-down type of restaurant. I have been there for a little over two years now, and MOST of the time I love it (but I did NOT love it on Christmas Day...)! (I am a line person/cashier, and my job is to take care of the customers, handle their transactions, refill the ice bin or buckets as needed, restock the glasses, trays, and make tea, coffee, and handle the drinks as needed, among other chores. My job is very physical, and by shift's end, I am usually quite sore and physically exhausted.)
We at Golden Corral got KILLED: everybody (and their mother) were out, and we had plenty of seniors coming in for eats; and there were millions of little kids running amuck. There were some people I wanted to call a grinch; they were obnoxious and rude, and several of the servers got stiffed big time (no tips whatsoever). Then the dishwasher machine freaked out, and for about an hour, the dishwashers in the back had to do dishes BY hand; and the piles of dirty dishes was nothing short of phenominal. Yet we tried our best to put on our game faces, and we tried our best to do our job, and we tried to keep smiles on our sweaty, hot faces. From open to close it was solid out the door (at times the line went halfway around the building, and we were rippin' and roarin' like sixty!), and I know we must have made over $10,000 in business!
After I got home, I died; I crashed and went immediately to bed; but then maman called me downstairs to open gifts; and I was NOT in the mood. I was rather grouchy, and I guess maman knew I was in one of my moods: she hardly said three words to me. I told her if I saw one more customer, I was going to kill somebody! (NOT really, but I WAS hacked off BIG time!) But my grinchy mood was soon but a memory as we dived into the cornucopia of presents, and I got a lot of neat things (new clothes, cash, CD's, several DVD's--and a DVD player!--, new shoes, socks, and underwear, gift certificates to WaldenBooks, Wal*Mart, Barnes and Noble Booksellers, Mardel's Christian Bookstores, and Block Buster, and some gift certificates for free pizza). I also got new leather boots, new hair doodads, new school supplies for college, and a video game. I really made out like a bandit, and my once-foul mood was now obliberated. After I opened my tons of gifts, I told my parents I was going to bed, and I was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. I was that tired; they really beat me to death at work!! YIKES!
I am so glad I am off until Friday (after Christmas, I NEED some time off!)...I also was off yesterday, for church, and I just lazed around and chawed down on Christmas treats and cookies. YUMM!
All I can say is this: next year, I am NOT working Christmas Day; it was the PITZ!! BAH the humbug!! GRR!
a REAL GRINCH cHRISTMAS kAREN!;-) i REMEMBER WHEN i HAD MY RESTAURANT, REALLY HARD WORK! Sorry didn't catch cass on;-) Great story! Love, Eileen...Happy New Year!
I know just what you mean and that happened a lot when I worked on Christmas. But I did get a guy back by putting crab juice in his lemon pie. That was a long time ago at Shoney's and don't the ones that stiff you want the most. But glad you had a nice day after all and boy is sleep great.
