Louisiana decides to write her family a letter before she leaves for America tomorrow. She has been in Sri Lanka, caring for the tsunami/earthquake victims, for about a week, and she has seen and learned so much.
Monday morning, January 17, 2005, early (2:30 a.m.; will be leaving by noon today for home, sweet home!!)~
Dear Family~
Hello! This is your wife/maman speaking! I am sitting here in my motel room, and my bags are all packed; it seems hard to believe that the week I have been here in Sri Lanka has gone by so fast! It seems like it was only yesterday when I got here; now I will be leaving in about nine hours, and I will be home sometime Wednesday afternoon! Oh, I can't wait to see you guys; I have missed you all so very much!!
I have enjoyed your emails; and I have meant to answer each and every one, but I had been working anywhere from 12 to 18 hours, and I am past exhausted! I plan on doing one thing when I get home: crawling into my nice, soft, warm bed and SLEEP for a few days!! I am so tired I don't know whether I am coming or going, and half the time I don't even know what time it is or what day it is because I have been holed up in the hospital, taking care of so many patients!
I will tell you this: the little girl who was in a coma has awakened; and she seems to have all her faculties present: she can hear, see, smell, and taste, and she can also talk. It is amazing how far she has come along! And I have since found out her name: her name is Rani, and she is five years old; and she is from Sri Lanka. She apparently lost all her family in the disaster, but she doesn't know that yet. I have fallen in love with her, and it has gotten to the point to where I want to eventually make plans to adopt her. Well, not only her, but the little baby I told you about the other day: it is a little six-month-old boy, and his name is Arjun Ravi; and he is the cutest little bug! He stared at me the entire time I was there, and whenever I held him in my arms, he seemed to think that he belonged there; and it was very moving. Like Rani, little Arjun is an orphan of the storm, but he is too little to know about his family. So I am thinking of adopting Arjun too! Am I crazy or WHAT?? LOL
I am still concerned about Adhita: she is recovering slowly from her surgery, and when she found out that I was leaving, she cried, she absolutely cried. I cried too because I have fallen in love with her: such a sweet, sweet lady with such a quiet spirit about her! I don't know what will happen to her, but I pray that her husband shows up, and I pray that she gets over her illness and her amputation; although I do know that she will have a very long road to recovery ahead of her. I shall miss her so much! But I am sure that Venkatesh Arjuwal will keep me informed as to how she is doing; he is going to stay longer and help out as best as he could; but I have to get back home; which is why I am leaving later today. I am really looking forward to coming home: the acrid-smelling, hot, humid air is starting to get to me, and I have seen far too much in the way of desolation and despair; and I am about ready for a change and to come back home to my familiar world! Dr. Wright is also coming home with me, as is Gloria Trainor; she has been sick since she got here (she had a round of diarrhea, and she still isn't over it completely; they think she may have had a mild case of malaria). Dr. Emmons is coming back too; but Kerry Weaver, Jules Montanegra, Kendall Smith, and Venkatesh Arjuwal will be staying at least several more weeks here in Sri Lanka.
I was so happy to hear about Ronee' making it to "America's Most Talented Kids"! I knew she would; I TOLD you she deserved to be on that show!! I plan on giving her the biggest hug and kiss when I see her! Good for her! I heard from her twice, and she really wants me to come home, doesn't she? But she will still have to face me when I talk to her about her attitude and how she has been fighting with Johnny; there is no way she is going to get away with bossing him or fighting with him like that! Their jealousy and anger towards each other has GOT to come to an end..and the sooner, the BETTER!! Johnny will also have to hear from me, so he isn't immune from my wrath, either! So just tell them that they will hear from me (Maman) about their fighting ways!
Johnny also wrote to me, and he really seems depressed. Maybe we ought to consider counseling for him; it may help with his attitude! Maybe even Ronee' could benefit; she could use an "attitude adjustment" too! I am sorry he and Ronee' have been having a hard time in getting along lately! I pray that they work out their differences, but they both could benefit from some counseling! We will talk more about this after I have recovered from my trip to Sri Lanka! Give me a few days; it may be a few days before I actually feel HUMAN again or feel like I am not halfway around the world! A 30-long flight on an airplane is not the best way to spend a day, and it is a little hard on the ol' sciatica! *OW!* My body is absolutely KILLING me! And I am afraid it will be worse before it gets better! Aye ye' yaie!! LOL (I may have to resort to using my Lofstrand crutches again...my body will NOT be happy when I step off that plane on Wednesday! Or maybe I'd better have you bring my wheelchair; I may need it! The cane may not help after sitting 30 hours on a plane! LOL)
Oh, God, God, God...a MILLIPEDE just fell into my lap...CRIKEY, he is HUGE!! GAWD! >cringing< I think he must have gotten into my hair, and I didn't realize it until I looked down, and there was this THING with LEGS moving around in my lap! EWWWW, EWWW, EWWW! I think I am going to go now; I have to use the facilities, if you know what I mean...mother Nature is calling! I will see you on Wednesday afternoon sometime; I can't wait! Until then, please take care, and thanks for all your emails; they kept me sane on such an insane, crazy week! I love you all with all my heart and soul, and I hope God continues to bless you all always! See you in a few days!
(((HUGS))) As always, your wife/mother, Louisiana Mayrah. :D
P.S.: The little guy in the pic is one I took care of; he had malaria; and he was pretty sick, but he seems to be recovering from his illness. He will be weak for a while, but it seems that the danger is past! I pray he continues to recover! Please pray for him, his name is Parminder, and he is six. He lost his family in the disaster.
This is a wonderful story, Karen, how could anyone read it and not be touched. It is so sad what has happened and so many have a long and difficult job putting their lives back together. I hope that the children who lost parents will be coupled with parents who lost children so that together they can all heal. I also hope that adoption will be opened to the rest of the world as I am certain that there are many families who would love to open their homes and hearts to one of these orphaned children.
Take care,
Sherry
