Ronee' writes about one of her all time favorite shows on television and why she is so crazy about it. Like all fans of the show, she is caught up in the frenzy, and she had to share her views about the show.
If I have to choose my all time favorite TV show on TV, I would have to pick "American Idol", which has just now started its fourth season. I have been a fan of this show ever since it started, and I have seen some people come from obscurity to become giant, full-fledged stars (Ruben Studdard--he reminds me of a big, soft teddy bear, and he has a beautiful voice!--, Clay Aiken--he can sing, but I am really not a fan of his; I don't know why, but he really doesn't do anything for me!; he lost to Ruben Studdard--, Fantasia Barrino--this gal has some serious pipes, and she was destined to win the third season from the get-go; it was obvious at the beginning when she auditioned that she was a force to be reckoned with--, and Kelly Clarkson, who was the first winner of the show--and deservedly so; she came from virtually being an unkown to sudden superstardom. She came through near the end, when it really mattered, and when the first season of the show was over, she was crowned the first "American Idol" champion). There have also been some terrific people who didn't win, but are becoming famous in their own right (Justin Guarini, Kimberly Locke, Nikki McKibben, Josh Gracin, and Tamyra Gray).
Part of the show's appeal is not only the undiscovered talent who quickly test their vocal chops week after week, in the hopes of becoming the "next 'American Idol'", but the three judges who critique (and often criticize) the singers each and every week. There is Randy Jackson, a music producer who knows what the music industry is all about, pop diva Paula Abdul who had some big hits of her own in her musical career, and of course, the guy "everyone loves to hate", Simon Cowell, who can really lay it on the line. He can be extremely critical in his judging, and when he speaks, he doesn't mince words. He can be cruel at times (he has been known to make a contestant cry more than once with his acid-tongued remarks, and if he thinks a person is "fat" or "ugly", he will tell the person so, right to their face!), but he is also very honest and forthright. He is another guy who knows the music industry inside out and backwards, and when he speaks, people had best pay attention to what he has to say. People tune in to "American Idol" every week, just to hear what Simon has to say. Now, I don't always agree with what he has to say, but I WILL say this: the guy is consistent, and he tells it like it is.
I happen to know this first hand because last year, when I was ten and a half, I auditioned for "American Idol" (already knowing full well that I was too young, but I still wanted to see if I could stomach the tryouts, and I wanted to see what the craziness was all about!), and I had to face Randy, Paula, and Simon in person. Here I was, this scared little kid who had no business being at the auditions; yet I wanted to try out, so I did. I was plenty nervous when I sang, but I tried to do the best job possible, and when it was over, the there judges seemed to like me, and Simon looked at me and said, "Well, dear, I must say you can sing, but I am afraid that I can't let you on the show. You know you are way too young, don't you?" I nodded my head, and he went on to say, "I normally don't like kid singers--in fact, I absolutely loathe kid singers--, but you aren't half bad. In all actuality, you are quite good, but I am afraid that you are young. You have to be at least sixteen to be on the show." He wasn't mean to me at all, he was just being honest, and I liked what he had to say to me. And I agreed with what he had to say; it turned out that he was right. I was too young--at the time, I was only 10 1/2--, but I still wanted to try out, to see if I could do it.
It ended up that I got all their autographs, and they also had me pose with them for a picture; and I also got an "American Idol" jacket. Even though I was deemed too young to be on "American Idol", I still made out in the end, and I had a BLAST! The judges were all cool, and it was a thrill just to meet them all in person!
I have enjoyed "American Idol" ever since it first came out on the air, and I have been lucky to have seen the "Idol"ers in concert when they came to our area: I got to meet Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Kimberly Locke, Josh Gracin, Diana DeGarmo, Fantasia, Justin Guarini, and all the others; and they were all fantastic in concert and off the stage. They were more than happy to pose for pictures with me, and they were more than happy to sign my autograph album! They were surprised when I told them I tried out for the show, but they told me to "keep on dreaming and keep on reaching for the stars". They were happy that I was interested in music, and that I loved "American Idol".
I don't know who the winner will be this year, but one thing IS certain: I WILL be watching the drama unfold every week, and I won't stop until the next winner is crowned! As long as "American Idol" remains on the air, they have a fan in me!
