Louisiana Sandusky, currently hospitalized and recovering from back surgery, attempts to write a letter on her laptop computer to her friends.
Saturday, Feb. 26, 2004 (I lost a few days due to sleeping a lot; I want those days BACK!!)~
Dear Louisa and Kendra~
I am happy to report that I am feeling a little better (still in a lot of pain, but the nurses just gave me something in my I.V., so if I peter out and stop writing, don't blame me; it's just the medication is playing weird tricks on me!), at least I am no longer having the pains in my legs like I was prior to having the surgery. My legs actually feel good; it's my back that is hurting, but the doctors say there's no leakage or infection, so that is good news. I may be out of the hospital by Monday if I continue to do well.
I don't remember much about the surgery (all I remember, really, is Dr. Wright telling me that he was going to put something into my I.V. line to relax me; next thing I knew, I was waking up in the Recovery Room, as a nurse was placing oxygen prongs into my nostrils, to help me bring me out of the anesthesia); but I do remember getting sick in the Recovery Room (and several times thereafter once I had been taken to my regular room in the NeuroSurg unit), and I remember that my legs weren't hurting, and it surprised me. I have been awake more and more as the days have passed, but I did miss at least two days by sleeping! (I want those days BACK!!) I have had some pain, but not too much, and if it got to be too much, I have been getting pain medication, and yesterday, they had me up for the first time since my surgery; only I am using a walker until my strength can be built up. It is a pain using the walker, but at least I am up and walking at times! I have a back brace on, and I will have to wear the brace until the doctors feel that my back has healed sufficiently; so it will be a while before I can do a lot for myself. I will need a lot of support and help from my family (or friends that will probably drop by upon my return home from the hospital), but the doctors ARE hopeful that I will no longer need the crutches when I recover. I may still need a cane, but I used a cane before I went to Sri Lanka, and the only reason why I was on crutches in the first place was because they had a tsunami warning (it turned out to be false, thank goodness, and in my panic, as I was fleeing, I dropped my cane, and a kind-hearted doctor gave me a pair of beat- up Lofstrand crutches, which I had been using up until my admission to the hospital and then the surgery).
I am still planning on going to Greece in May for Sari and Nikolas' wedding, and in April, Johnny and Barbara will be going to Alaska for a week, where they will stay with my friend, Sikik Eegeesiak, who lives in Barrow, Alaska. Ronee', as you know, is now back home from her trip to Hollywood, and it is apparent that she really had a great time there. She said it was great seeing you guys and getting to meet Rebekkah Rachel Cohen and her parents, Naomi and David; and it was great getting to meet the other contestants who were on the same show that she was, and getting to meet the judges and the host. She really looked good, and she got some color in her cheeks. That California air really agrees with Ronee'!
I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate all the prayers and love that you have given to me, and I thank you for caring! I will go now; I am getting all fuzzy in my head again, and my eyesight is blurring; think the meds are taking effect. I will lie down now and sleep for a while; I will write again upon my return home from the hospital! Until then, take care, and God bless!

A very nice touch Karen. Very well written. I have 3 bulging discs in my back, and the doctor has been talking about back surgery, but he wants to be sure that my heart will be able to handle the anesthetic. Yesterday I went to the hospital for pre-admission testing because on March 7th I will have nasal surgery (same day), to remove pollops that are way back by the sinuses. I will have to sit up all night until he takes out the packing on the 8th. What a night that will be. I like this series, and I think I shuld read all the other ones too (giggles).
