Written from my hospital room~
Dear Journal~
This won't be long, but I just had to write about the sudden announcement of the passing of the Pope, John Paul II. I was saddened to learn of his death, but at the same time, I am happy that his long road of health problems has finally come to a merciful end.
John Paul was a man on a mission: he touched the lives of many people, both young and old, rich and poor, famous and insignificant, and if there ever was a man who taught the world of dignity, grace, compassion, and caring, Pope John Paul II was that man. I have never seen him in person (only on tv), but I would have liked to. He was the longest-serving pope of the Catholic church (over 20 years), and he was the most-travelled pope of all the popes who were before him. He was said to have been a very kind and gentle man with a very strong devotion to his Catholic faith, and he bridged the generations. He was one of the most recognizable people on the face of the Earth, and he did a lot for the Catholic faith--and religion in general. He was the first non-Italian person to be elected Pope (he was born in Poland), and he spoke quite a few foreign languages fluently. He also had a sense of humor, and he was well loved (and respected) by people of all faiths.
The pope had a long list of health problems: Parkinson's disease, severe arthritis that severely affected his mobility, and in recent weeks, problems with his kidneys, stomach, and breathing. He ended up having to have a tracheotomy because he had a bout of the flu that severely affected his breathing, and ever since, his health spiraled downward, and it's been getting worse by the day. Now he is gone, and the world will soon mourn the passing of a man who served God well by doing His works in his own way.
God bless the memory of John Paul II, and God bless the Catholic people as they mourn his passing!

Although I am no longer a practicing Catholic, I still have a lot of respect for a man like the Pope. He showed courage, dignity, and grace in trying times, and he taught many people the meaning of compassion and caring. He had a sense of humor, and he seemed to be a very gentle man, and that is something that you don't find a lot of in people nowadays. He will be missed by one and all! God bless him and his memory....
He will be missed by people around the world, even those who are not Catholic, but whom he touched in their hearts, and souls, with his own. Pope, John Paul II, even though he has passed on now, is still one of the most visual persons, in all of the world. May he rest in peace now, at the right hand of the Lord Jesus, whose works, he tirelessly did, and whose Gospel he never got tired of preaching.

Nice write, except, Karen, I believe there were some French popes in the Middle Ages. Rome got yukky and dirty, and the French and Italians were fighting. They ended up moving the Vatican to Avignuon (sp/) in France for a good while., Then it came back to Rome. This was in the 1300s, I believe
