A young girl writes about her feelings regarding Memorial Day, which is this coming Monday.
Memorial Day. Just what exactly IS Memorial Day besides being a national holiday that causes us kids to have a day off from school and many people off from work?
Well, it is a day of remembering those who gave their lives so we could be free, and it is a day to reflect on why we are free and why many men and women are dying overseas. It is a day of sadness and grief as family members who lost loved ones in the war think of their deceased sons or daughters, husbands or wives, uncles and aunts, or even friends. It is a day to thank those who bravely went into battle so we could enjoy the freedoms that we in America have today.
I am only 12 years old, but I have a grandfather who was in the Armed Services when he was younger, and even though he personally didn't go into battle, he still served his country, and he remains very proud of our nation even today; and he is very patriotic and loves America and all that she stands for. He lost friends in the war, and he grieves for them now; but I am thankful that he survived. He could have very easily died, but God had His Hand on him, and he is still alive now. He is my own personal hero because he went into the service at a scary and uncertain time, and he served his country well for the period he was in. I also have a friend, Roberto Sormiento, who was in the Marines not long after September 11, 2001, happened, and he went over to Afganistan to help our soldiers fight; and he too came back okay; and I am very grateful for that. Too many other families weren't so lucky: their sons or daughters died in the heat of battle, and now they are left to grieve and remember; and it is these families that we must pause and thank. This is why we have a day like Memorial Day so we can remember our heroes, living AND dead, and thank them for their brave service to our country.
God bless our military men and women in time of war and in time of peace, and never forget for a moment why we are free! They are the reason why we enjoy the things we do today, and if it were not for them, we would be living in fear and in tyranny!

Now many people would rather forget why we celebrate Memorial Day (especially the kids like myself, and even older folk), but I am one who CHOOSES to remember. I say this because I have a grandfather and a good friend who are veterans, and if it were not for them, I would NOT be free today. I also choose to remember because we are at war, and we can't let the enemy win!!
