Ronee' is still awaiting word on her friend in Mississippi, and she is also writing about her new sister, Janica, who arrived a few weeks ago from Romania.

Dear Journal~
I haven't written in here in a while, and I am indeed sorry; but I have been busy. We got our new sister from Romania, and she is a very sweet kid. She is really pretty too, and she is shy, but I am sure that once she gets used to us, and our way of life (as well as America and learning a new language), her true personality will soon start coming out. Janica Kryzstina is from Romania, as I just said, and she is eight. She has spina bifida, which has left her lower half paralyzed, and she walks with Lofstrand crutches too (just like me) and leg braces (but will use a wheelchair for longer trips).
As you can probably guess, this is Ronee'. I have been doing pretty good, but I am still wondering about Susie Jackson and her sisters, Lacey and Maria. Last I knew, they had been with a couple in California, and things were not going well for either of them (or for their mom, Audrey). Now, Audrey HAS written to mom a few times, but she is still very depressed, and she is still scared that her husband, Jack, will try to find her and try to hurt her again. It is a very sad situation, and I have been praying nonstop for them, it seems. I have written to Susie several times, and I have YET to hear from her. I am really getting concerned about her!
I haven't had too much problems with my arthritis (or my asthma) acting up, but my allergies have really been something else this summer. I have been going through BOXES of Kleenex like they were going out of style, and I have been hacking and sneezing my fool head off, and my nose (and throat) have been so sore. I am so sick of coughing, sneezing, or blowing my nose I could just SCREAM!! The weather has been hot here, and it seems that a lot of the time there's been a threat of rain, and I am sick and tired of this stagnant weather pattern!
I went to camp last week (Camp SteppingStone), and it went quite well, but Nicole and I still haven't been talking all that much, and it has me all worried. She and I used to be really palsy-walsy; now it seems that we are growing apart, and I am worried that I will be without a best friend by the time school starts, and I am scared that I will not know too many people once I DO start! I am also scared and nervous because I will be one of the "lower kids on the totem pole", and the eighth graders will be looking on us lowly seventh graders like we are made out of scum, and I am scared that I will be teased because of my being physically disabled and being short. I hope I am not, but I can't help my feelings at times, and right now, at the thought of school, my stomach turns into a bunch of knots!
Well, not much is going on, so I will go for now. I am feeling a bit blue because of not being able to talk to (or be with Nicole), and I am also sad because soon summer vacation will be history, and I will have to soon start getting up at five in the morning (three during the mornings I have therapy)...*GROANNNNNNNNNN* I have been enjoying sleeping in this summer, and I have also been enjoying a break from the homework and sitting inside a stuffy building for a million hours! LOL I will write in here again soon if anything happens, so stay tuned! Bye for now!!

You have an amazing capacity to see inside the young person's head, Karen, and to capture well both her youthful resiliance and her understandable frustrations. What a brave and stout-hearted girl she is, and so considerate, too, of others' needs. Great awareness portrayed here as well as knowledge and understanding. I like this--you caught the anxiety of a person starting jr. high, and old friendships breaking up. ronee is no different than any of us really, which is, of course, the subtle point you are trying to make.
