Ronee' is worried about the approaching hurricane (Hurricane Rita) that is threatening the Texas/Louisiana coastline.
What more do these people need? They certainly don't need any more heartache; but that is exactly what is unfolding in the coastline of the southern United States at the present time. There is another huge hurricane that is threatening the Texas/Louisiana coastline; and there is a mass exodus underway.
Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana and Mississippi just three weeks ago, and now Louisiana (and southeastern Texas) is facing another hurricane, this time in the form of Rita. My aunts who live in Port Arthur, Texas and Burleson, Texas, respectively, are now at a motel (Motel 6) with their families here in Nashville (thank goodness!), but there are other people who are stuck in traffic trying to flee the approaching storm, and traffic is a nightmare at best. There was also a bus fire on I-45 just south of Dallas which killed maybe up to 25 elderly patients from a nursing home who were being evacuated (the bus had mechanical failure just prior to catching on fire, and the fire was ignited by several patients' oxygen tanks), and the road is still shut down as far as I know. This happened about six/six thirty this morning, and it has been all over the news. It is a very sad situation because the patients were nearly at their destination when this fire took place; so there were already some deaths--and that was even BEFORE Hurricane Rita hit!
I don't know what is going on in the world today, but frankly, it is scaring the hell out of me. I have been in several hurricanes (including Andrew, but I wasn't born yet; I don't remember anything about it, but I have seen pictures of it and read articles or stories or seen footage of it on the news), and I have had to stay at a shelter to get away from a hurricane, and that was NOT fun; so I know very well of what the newspaper and news people are talking about. Hurricanes are nothing to be taken lightly, and when you are in one, it is very scary! The winds howl, and the power flicks on and off; and the walls are moving in and out from the force of the winds; and water is seeping in from the windows and doors; and you don't know whether you are going to get out alive! All you CAN do is pray and hope that you survive! I don't ever want to be in a monster hurricane like Katrina (or now Rita); I don't know WHAT I would do! I would be scared halfway to death!!
There is a chance that this hurricane can cause more flooding for New Orleans, Louisiana (that is the LAST thing they need right now!!), and there is a chance that it can cause a 50-FOOT storm surge when it does hit Galveston. But I WILL say this about the mayor of Galveston: she used her head, and she told her people to leave in plenty of time (she had them start leaving as early as Monday or Tuesday, which gave them plenty of time to evacuate!), whereas the mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, didn't have her people evacuate until just a day or two BEFORE. It is no wonder so many people were trapped or caught unawares. Had the mayor of New Orleans evacuated the city ahead of time, there wouldn't be so many dead people now! It is really a horrible situation all around, and I really feel bad for those people who couldn't get out and ended up at the Superdome. They REALLY went through hell, and they saw things that should have NEVER happened had the stupid law got involved and stopped some of this craziness that went on! They also should have done something about the gangs and looters! That was TOTALLY uncalled for!!
At school, this is all we have been talking about...the stupid hurricane, and also the bus crash that happened in Texas. I am so upset I don't know what to say or think; but I am right now getting all hurricaned out, and I am scared for the people of southeastern Texas and Louisiana! All I CAN do is pray and hope that it doesn't turn into another Hurricane Katrina like disaster!
