Some Phone calls can be unnerving.

Yes,Sir, I must admit I did away with my mistress for good, she was getting too pushy about my divorcing my wife and marrying her. So after we had dinner that night, I drove her out to the desert on the pretext of getting away from it all and having some fresh air . She trusted me implicitly,I drew my gun and shot her in the head. I then dragged her body over to a spot beneath some trees, took out a shovel from the trunk and buried her . I then drove home to my beloved wife of thirty years.

The next day the phone rang. I took it up.

"Yes?" I queried.

"I know who you are and I saw what you did!"said a woman’s voice.

I gasped. I just couldn’t believe it. how did they get onto me so quickly? I couldn’t figure it out.I was nonplussed.

"What?,I don’t know what you are talking about" I bluffed.

"You don’t,eh?"

"Look, who the hell is this?"

"Don’t worry, I will get in touch" said the voice and the line went dead.

The rest of the week was hell for me. Sometimes the phone would ring and when I answered , it went dead and I thought I heard a chuckling before it went dead.

The torment was getting to me. I became irritable and short tempered. My wife brought this to my attention saying how I have changed recently, that I was acting out of character. I passed this off as work pressure.

Then the phone rang. This time my wife picked it up and quickly replaced it

""Who was It? I asked.

"The caller hung up " she said .

"Must be some prankster" I replied.and continued reading my papers though I couldn’t concentrate.

It rang again, this time I got up and picked it up.

"Remember me?" said the voice.

"Look,I am getting sick and tired of your bloody nonsense," and slammed the phone down.

"Who was it,dear?" asked my wife from the kitchen..

"Some chap wanting me to buy a newspaper subscription". I lied.

"Please , Henry ," she said, "Try to be civilover the phone, what’s got into you?"

"Nothing, Dear ,"I replied." just nerves I guess."

"Maybe you should see a doctor". She suggested.

"You know how I can’t stand those quacks!"I said a bit hastily

"Just a thought" She replied evenly." Don’t get your knickers in a twist!"

"Sorry, Pet, I didn’t mean to shout."

I had gotten so fed up with the calls that I felt like turning myself in to the Police, but I knew that would have caused a scandal, with me being a prominent member of the community and all that,so I refrained if only to save my wife the humiliation.

While at work the next day, I saw a newspaper item that caught my attention. It read :

"TEENAGERS CONFESS TO MAKING HOAX PHONE CALLS TO UNKNOWN PERSONS AS A GAME".

 The brief details read:

"Two teenagers, aged 17 and 18 years confessed to making hoax calls to unknown persons as a game. " We did it just for kicks" admitted one of the teenagers.

There was an on going police investigation after several reports were made to the police by various people in the community. The calls were traced to the teenager’s home in Bagotsville. The calls said" I know who you are, I saw what you did".

With relief, I closed the papers, got up and got me a stiff shot of Brandy from my desk drawer.

Post Script: My wife said that my behaviour pattern has improved over the following weeks and I am more my regular self.
