I
Vincenté said the story of the Red Sun is the same in a different way. Those who knew the Red Sun in his young days thought the Red Sun would never change. Back then the face of the Red Sun did not recognise itself.
II
When the Spanish men came with steel and shot, the desert people could not stand. Spanish men came with whips and chains to enslave the desert people in the Spanish men’s silver mines. The desert people chose to die. The Spanish men caught Blue Shoes a famous warrior who is not afraid. He looked the Spanish men in the eye and laughed. He played a trick on the Spanish men before they killed him. “Why you laugh” the hairy Spanish men wanted to know? Blue Shoes said, “We are a small people, not many, you want many people for your mines. Go that way,” he pointed towards the Liana Estacado (the Staked Plains), many people there,” he said. Blue Shoes died standing, facing the Spanish men.
The Spanish men carried steel and shot, whips and chains to the Liana Estacado. The Spanish men were many, it made no difference to the people of the Liana Estacado, many or few it is all the same to the Comanche. The Comanche wiped the Spanish men from the face of the blue land.
Blue Shoes who is not afraid walks the Nurmaná Road shining like the Red Sun. The face of the Red Sun is the same in a different way.
III
Vincenté said the Red Sun found a place in the Valle Pervdido del Rio (the Lost River Valley country, Mexico) where the Ones Who Came Before, the Old Ones who used magic lived before they crossed over to the Other Side. They use the Smoking Mirror to make a hole in the sky. The Red Sun made a place for Vincenté. The Red Sun made a place for the desert people the Spanish men did not find.
The Spanish men never came to the Valle Pervdido del Rio, they looked but they could not find the hidden place. The Red Sun said the hidden place protects itself. When I am no more, the Red Sun said, the valley will be the same, it will be different.
IV
Vincenté said, the women and young unmarried girls loved the Red Sun. Warriors admired the warmth and strength of his rays. The Red Sun stood tall and straight like a young tree. The Red Sun was the perfect proportion. When the Red Sun smiled his spirit shone through his eyes and his mouth. Children played in the rays of the Red Sun. Women and young girls laughed and chattered, wildness in the warrior heart slumbered.
The presence of the Red Sun sang in all things.
The Red Sun walked the Nurmaná Road.
The song of The Woman Who Sings In The Summer Valley sang in the blood of the Red Sun.
V
At that time, Vincent said, the enemy of the Red Sun tried to dim his rays. The enemy wanted to kill the Red Sun. The enemy was the enemy of the light.
The enemy of the Red Sun is the One Who Is Three. The one who shows three faces, the Rascal, the Trickster and the Coyote.
VI
One day the Red Sun lay in sweet repose down by the river where the red lilies bloom. He slumbered in the light and warmth of the yellow sun in the sky.
The enemy, hidden in the bushes, waited until he was sure the Red Sun was sound asleep.
The enemy sneaked up on the Red Sun and beat the sleeping form with a heavy war club, the Coyote left him bleeding and broken. The Trickster broke his hands. The Rascal broke his face and left him to die like a crippled dog out on the plains.
VII
The spirit of the Red Sun fluttered like a captive bird, his wounds were terrible, his broken face hideous. His handsomeness, his perfect proportion was no more. His mouth bubbled blood, His hands were tortured claws.
VIII
He stood, swaying, the way the laden bough sways in the wind.
The Red Sun stumbled away.
The Red Sun lost himself in the desert.
The Red Sun wanted to die.
The Red Sun went away from Nurmaná.
The Red Sun could not hear the song of The Woman Who Sings In The Summer Valley.
The Red Sun was lost and alone in his despair, alone in an empty land.
The enemy laughed to see the rays of the Red Sun stretched thin. The enemy spat in the dust and puffed out his chest with boastful breaths. The enemy left the Red Sun to wander and die in darkness.
IX
The eyes of the Red Sun could not see. The blood of the Red Sun did not flow.
The Red Sun stumbled and fell. The Red Sun lay still as death.
X
The spirit of the Red Sun fluttered in darkness.
The wind moaned and sighed but could not lift him up.
In the empty hollow the heartbeat of the Red Sun could not be heard.
Vincenté the old one advised, “Find the Red Sun and live.”
Vincenté said “sometimes the Red Sun does not recognize itself.”
Vincenté said “remind the Red Sun to heal itself.”
XI
In the strange night, in the spectral light of the misted moon, the old one reached out from Nurmaná, calling the Red Sun reviving the spirit of the Red Sun.
Come, the night wind whispered, “Come to me Red Sun, Red Sun, come to me Red Sun.”
XII
The Red Sun stirred. The wind died away. The night pulled back. Song of The Woman Who Sings In The Summer Valley flowed into his mouth on the Red Sun’s clear blue breath. The blood of the Red Sun flowed. The sound of the beat of the heart of the Red Sun filled the hollow.
XIII
The Red Sun crawled towards a nearby spring of cool, sweet water. The Red Sun drank deep. The Red Sun lay on his back in the misty moonlight and dreamed himself to the Other Side. Strange hands reached out to comfort him.
The wolf ran beneath the moon.
The wolf ran towards the rising sun.
The Red Sun would live; the Red Sun would find a way to defeat his enemy.
XIV
The Red Sun healed his broken hands. His hands were the same in a different way.
The Red Sun healed its broken face. It was not the same. The face of the Red Sun was terrible.
XV
The Red Sun did not recognise himself. The Red Sun lived alone in the desert. His face was terrible to look upon. His people would not want him now. His people would never again praise him.
The Red Sun was wrong. The people praised the spirit shining through in his smile. The people praised the warmth and strength of his rays. The people did not praise handsomeness.
XVI
The Rascal, the Trickster and the Coyote howled in anger when they heard the Red Sun lived. The three faces of the enemy said they would find the Red Sun and kill his rays.
XVII
The enemy of the Red Sun laughed to see his ugly face, his terrible scars, his hands that were the same in a different way.
The three faces of the enemy laughed and tormented the Red Sun and spat in the dust to show contempt for the cowardly thing the enemy believed the Red Sun had become.
XVIII
The Red Sun fled deep into the desert. The Rascal, the Trickster and the Coyote followed, tormenting his spirit with invisible darts.
XIX
Anguished and weary and tormented the Red Sun could run and hide his face no more. The Red Sun turned to face the enemy who shows three faces, his one good eye gleaming pale as the winter sun.
The Red Sun said, “You have driven away the song in my heart, the strength from my hands. You have made me terrible to look upon. You have tormented me to the edge of despair. You have tortured my spirit with invisible darts.”
The enemy who shows three faces laughed to see him brought so low, his rays warmless and wan.
XX
The Red Sun said, “I will not live in fear, I will not abandon life. I will not hide my face from The People. The Red Sun realised he had lost himself for a while, and found himself when the enemy took everything away and all he owned was his name.
XXI
The face of the Red Sun, though clouded in the shadow of his terrible scars, smiled. The spirit of the Red Sun shone through in his smile. The rays of the Red Sun poured out warm and strong and healing. The one good eye of the Red Sun gleamed like a star in the black sky.
XXII
The Rascal, the Trickster and the Coyote slunk away.
The Red Sun walked the Nurmaná Road in company with Woman Who Sings In The Summer Valley, Mee Chan Tay, she said, my evening heart.
XXIII
Vincenté said, “Sometimes the Red Sun lives in a different House in a different place, sometimes the Red Sun gets lost.”
