“I can’t hear you,” I said, “You’re just a voice in my head.
I wore a ragged coat and caught a tumbling breath; my feet were bare and cold.
I was a dream in my head a dream brought low and thin as sunlight is thin as a winter scream in the wind.
“The great secret,” she said, “you carry around in your scarecrow head, a raggedy man like you; Saint Jude in a shoe that’s who.”
“I cannot hear you,” I said, “You’re just a voice in my head.”
“Share your secret,” she urged, “the great secret that nailed you in sunlight, thin as a sigh worth of your life passing by.”
“I can’t hear you,” I said, “You’re just a voice in my head. I came down, I cried, I walked away don’t you know with holes in my hands and holes in my feet and a view in my eyes high on a hill where death shuffles bones. I was a dream in my head a dream brought low and thin as love is thin when love dies and you bury its soul. I wore a ragged coat and caught a tumbling breath, my feet were bare and cold and I don’t know where kindness lives I don’t know where love goes when hate nails your soul.”
