Angry and embarressed, Iris jumped from the, grabbed the bag of clothes and dressed quickly. She fumed at Trevor's insinuation! How dare he assume that she was a temptress! She was so angry! Him thinking she had loose morals! Then Iris stopped for a moment, smoothed down the powder blue sweater that stopped just above her naval. She sighed as her slim shoulders slumped. She couldn't remember what kind of morals she had! In bare feet, Iris brushed away tears and went in search of Trevor. He wasn't in the kitchen as she thought, but standing on the back porch with his back to her. She braced herself for the verbal attack she planned to launch on Mr. McKeon! "how dare you assume that I was purposely exposing myself for your entertainment! I-I went lookinf g for you but you weren't here, so I went and lay down. I must have dozed off while waiting for Rusty. The damn shirt must've rode up-" Iris stopped her rambling when Trevor, without even looking her way, reached out a cup towards her.
It was hot chocolate. Iris hesitantly took the cup. She started to speak again when Trevor pointed to the sky. "If you're through venting, take a look over there", his voice was deep and relaxed. Iris was a little shaken by his tender tone. Her eyes left his rugged handsome face and turned towards the sky. Beyond a thicket of tall pine trees, was a mass of swirling clouds. They glided in a unique formation that changed colors due to the harbor lights blinking behind them. Iris gasped softly, awed by such beauty! The soft pastel colors swirled and mixed to form a soft pulsing mass of slow moving clouds, like cotton candy in the dim morning sky. "oh my, how beautiful! it's breathtaking, isn't it?", she smiled up at Trevor in her child like innocence. Trevor stared down at her pretty upturned face, and suddenly noticed a splatter of freckles across her small round nose, which she crinkled when she smiled. "yes,, breathtaking", he mumbled. He wasn't referring to the beauty in the sky, but the one directly in front of him. He blinked and cleared his throat. "yeah, I usually come out here around 5:am, while it's still dark out. The colors are more entense", he said. Then his voice took on a more gentle tone. "Jane, about earlier...that was disrespectful of me. It won't happen again". They stood in silence for a few minutes. Trevor had never shared this site with anyone before. But he felt relaxed with the girl. He frowned. As if he'd known her for years.
Iris was surprised by his unexpected cordiality towards her. She couldn't blame him for being antsy about a stranger invading his space, sleeping in your bed! The The silence caused her to look away from the clouds to find Trevor staring down at her with a heated look frozen on his face. She caught her breath. It was the same look he had when she walked into his study! Iris tensed when Trevor made a move towards her, very slowly, but a sudden pounding at the door put a halt to whatever was about to happen. Without a word, Trevor walked past the girl and went to the door. Jovial laughter eased the tension that was building. It was Rusty! He greeted Iris with a warm hug and kiss. Iris was overjoyed to see him! She really liked Rusty, with his auburn curley hair and sunshiney smile. He was warm and lighthearted, unlike the tense and serious Trevor McKeon. Rusty had been to the Hospital. The police were indeed looking for her, but she already knew that. They were questioning everyone, which meant they'd be back to talk to Trevor about the night he found her. Iris cut her eyes at Trevor. "don't worry, Jane, it'll be alright. He read her fear, that they'd come take her away and she'd be vunerable to whoever is trying to hurt her. "you spoke to the police already, didn't you? why would they come back?", the girl asked nervously. Trevor walked away to avoid eye contact with her. He sighed. "well, I may have left out a small detail, and they figured that out." He looked keenly at Rusty, who's bright green eyes narrowed in anticipation.
"I told the police that when I found you, you were lying at the bottom of the cliffS, but I actually saw you fall, and you weren't alone. There was someone with you. I couldn't see his face, but he was holding your arms one minute and the next minute, you were tumbling down that rocky embankment." Trevor turned to Iris. He walked over and stood close to her. His voice was gentle when he spoke. " you came down close to Carton GladeWhite's estate." he paused to see if the name would cause a reaction form the girl. She just frowned and looked distant. "Jane, have you ever heard of TideWater before?" She snatched her head away quickly. The throbbing in her head started again. The names shot through her head, along with the entense pain. ( TideWater! Carlton GaldeWhite! TideWater! what do they mean?), Jane's thoughts were cloudy, dark, and frightening! "I-I don't know! maybe I have", she felt sick for some reason. She was sweating now. Why? Rusty was concerned. "Jane, you okay? did you remember something?" The girl jerked her head towards Rusty, eyes wide with fear. "Jane?" She screamed and ran for Trevor's room. "Noooo, no no leave me alone!"
