Dear Gina Singleton~
Hi! Thank you for your letter; it was good to hear from you. Your daughters (Asia, Ashleigh, and Flora) sound beautiful; you will have to send me a picture of them!
I am sure you are a good mamma; it's just too bad some people can't see past the wheelchair or the fact that you are single. I have no problem with it; for years I had to prove to people that even though I had a bad back and used a cane (or crutches) for walking, I did my job as a mamma, and I did my job beautifully. (I am very stubborn; if I want to do something, I will find a way. :) )
I am married; have been married for nearly 15 years now to William (Bill) Sandusky. My husband works at Wal*Mart, where he greets people when they come into the store or bids them goodbye when they leave, helping them whenever it is needed, and I am a nurse at a hospital not far from where I live. Add to this resume', a full-time mamma and a full-time writer (in a few months, my fourth book will be released); so my life is never dull.
My children range in age from 2 on up to nearly 24, and they cmoe from places like the United States of America, Mexico, Guatemala, Holland (the Netherlands), France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Iran, Sri Lanka, Africa, Russia, Romania, Bosnia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, and Korea.
Most are also disabled, quite a few of them quite significantly. Most are physically disabled, but several (Todd, Jodie, Roberto) are both physically and mentally disabled. Their disabilities range from "hidden" conditions like epilepsy or learning disabilities to obvious ones like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Down's syndrome, visual (or hearing) problems, scars from surgeries or burns, congenital amputeeism, dwarfism, allergies/asthma, cystic fibrosis or other breathing problems, speech problems, spina bifida, and arthritis (JRA).
Even though my kids may be disabled, they are kids first, and I and my husband both try to accentuate on the positives and raise them to be self-sufficient in an unforgiving world not geared to their specific handicaps. So far, they have managed to flourish beautifully, thanks to the Grace of a Loving God! :)
I am a born-again Christian (over four years now! :) ), but my husband has always known about Jesus. (Before I became saved, I was a practicing Catholic; I grew up in the Catholic faith.) We go to a Bible-believing, spirit-filled church (Christ Community Assembly of God), and we get so much out of church. We go to church regularly on both Sunday and Wednesday, and we go to choir practice on Thursday.
In addition to all of this, I run an adoption community where we talk to one another about our kids or our experience as parents, and we also help each other during each phase of the adoption process. Some are just starting out while others (like myself, as an example) are seasoned pros. The kids are our world, and it has gotten to the point to where I cannot imagine my life without any of the children! Our children are a blessing from God, and they have all brought us endless moments of joy! :)
Well, Gina, I am going to go to bed now; I am crazy to get up at this early hour (I do it normally every Monday through Friday; I work from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. at my nursing job at the hospital; I often do overtime, working double shifts)! Karen, I'm beginning to believe that your stories are non-fiction! They are just too full of compassion! I really missed reading them! Wonderful write as always Karen!
