Some neighbors write about the Sandusky family, who have adopted fifty-three children, most of them handicapped.
I don't know how they do it, "they" being Bill and Louisiana Sandusky, our neighbors. They have a seemingly endless stream of kids, and yet they seem to have everything under control.
Bill and Louisiana Sandusky have taken it upon themselves to adopt children nobody else would ever think of taking in: children who are older than the age of two years, children who are of different races or ethnic backgrounds, children who are part of a brother or sister team, or children who have heartbreaking physical, mental, or medical problems.
They first adopted Johnny, a little boy from Germany, when he was a few months old. Just one week later came a little girl from Louisiana named Ronee' who had just been released from the hospital, where she had spent the previous weeks fighting for her life. (She had been born very premature.)
After Johnny and Ronee' came seven more children, which instantly brought their family from four on up to nine, and it seems that ever since then, children seem to continue to come out of the woodwork. Now they have a whopping fifty three children to take care of!
Now they are thinking of adding yet another child to the fray: a little boy with cerebral palsy who is from Russia. They just found out about him ysetercday, and both Bill and Louisiana have been in a dither ever since then.
Personally, I think they are a little touched in the head, if you know what I mean. No sane person would ever THINK of adopting yet another child when they already have more than enough children now as it is!! Either they are stir-crazy or else they have an awful lot of love to give from their hearts!
Their children have handicaps ranging from autism and mental retardation to cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and spina bifida, and some of the kids are on crutches or use wheelchairs. Some are learning disabled and others are visually impaired (or hearing impaired). One boy was burned beyond recognition in a terrible fire, and another girl was born without arms OR legs (plus she had been born a little person). Another girl has legs, but no arms, and she was born paralyzed with spina bifida. Another girl has arthritis and just recently graduated from walking with crutches to two canes.
Their children come from places like Korea, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Romania, Vietnam, Africa, Russia, France, Italy, Iran, Bosnia Hercozovina, and Mexico as well as from the United States and Canada. The children now are growing up, and they range in age from two on up to nearly 24. All but five live at home, so the house is still quite packed.
I have been watching the Sanduskys for a while now, but even with all the chaos and confusion that they face every day, they are still very good, loving, fair parents who dedicate their lives in providing for their mini United Nations, and they are very good at what they do.
A lot of people can learn much just by observing them in action, and once people see the Sanduskys up close and personal, they are forever changed. I know we have been; they are definitely One Of A Kind, and they are more than a family: they are Miracle Workers in the true st sense, and they are Angels sent from Above to give children without hope a chance at love and having a family of their very own.
The Sandusky family are a Godsend, any couple who can adopt 53 children of varying disabilities, without blinking an eye are miracle workers !
