When a man loves a woman and she loves back, but fate came twisting everything.
From the book:
"Image of a sad man in a broken mirror"
The man
“This is a beautiful day” he thought, he had called her at work asking her to wait for him by the front door “because we are going to eat out”.
He didn’t tell her that after seven years of saving, two jobs and many many double shifts weekends for the double overtime, he had saved enough for the down payment for “their” house, the one with nursery room walls already decorated and which she thought were “that” special, were children grow happy.
They saw the house so many years back and she fell in love with it, but they couldn’t afford it at the time.
Suddenly it came available again, his saving had piled high enough to pay so much down and get a mortgage ridiculous low. They could furnish it with the money from the sale of his beloved, shining, collectors object, spotless Harley.
Becoming a father was straddling a bike’s no-no
He liked the idea; he even could hear little voices calling him “dad!”
From Mamma Rosa’s Restaurant he had pick-up a full picnic basked with food and wine, which had precariously balanced over the bike’s tank between his arms and legs. They had drove to the lake.
This was one of the last late afternoons of summer with a clear blue sky, which showed here and there a pink blushing in some clouds dots.
The water of the lake was calm and flat like an enormous mirror that a mad giant had put there so God could see His face.
All the trees around the water’s edge were wearing green gowns but already showing trimmings of red, orange and gold on the fingers of some branches.
The warm breeze was almost unnoticeable and felt like a caress.
He was feeling good! Even…romantic! Sitting here in the, what else, but on an Italian red and white chequered tablecloth.
He had her left hand and was looking over the waters far away into their future when a big bird suddenly came into his vision, gliding fast, and when in the middle of the lake spoiled his moment by letting the bombs away.
In the pristine waters of a moment before a few wave circles started their journey toward the beach and the moment was gone.
He turned his head and found that she was looking at him with misty eyes; maybe she was as happy as he was.
“I just purchased “your” house” he said, “remember “your” house, with the nursery? It’s ours…….will you marry me forever?”
And with a flourish he showed the palm of his hand holding a diamond ring.
The woman
“This is a beautiful day,” he said into the phone. He had called her at work asking her to wait for him downstairs, by the curb, because they were going eating out.
She didn’t tell him that she was busted out with fatigue, or that he should be getting all the rest he could for the double shift weekends. They needed the money for a house down payment; they were looking, always looking for “the” house. She couldn’t settle for one, it wasn’t the house with the nursery.
She had fell in love with that house, but they couldn’t afford at the time.
She was awakened from the reverie by the sudden arrival of the Harley with a big square basket precariously balancing over the tank. He loved that monster,
shining, a collectors object spotless Harley.
After putting the helmet, she straddled over and put her arms around his waist.
She wondered why he was seemingly so happy.
He was always full of optimism and looking to tomorrow like children see forward to the Christmas morning under the tree.
They drove to the lake.
Last days of summer, late afternoon with a clear blue sky showing here and there a blushing pink in some small clouds.
The water of the lake was calm, like an enormous mirror and she wondered if she could see her face from above.
The trees around the water’s edge were still green, but already showing lines of red, orange and gold from the fall’s rainbow.
The warm breeze was almost unnoticeable and felt like a caress.
They were sitting on a red and white chequered tablecloth.
She saw him looking over the water, far away, and was moved by this side of his so unusual. Quiet, pensive, so en peace with himself with her company, and felt warm tears burning in the eyes.
A dark bird crossed in front of the landscape, its sudden and fast silent glide startling her for a second, disturbing the lake, which protested the intrusion with rings of disapproval. An omen. The end?
She hadn’t told him the cause of her fatigue, today the doctor said of a very aggressive leukemia, with no chances whatsoever of surviving another birthday.
She needed to tell someone! She felt the chest bursting and so the tears.
She saw his head turning and before she could utter a word, he was looking expectantly into her eyes and she couldn’t spoil his happiness, not now.
Unexpectedly he said “I just purchased “your” house, remember your house, with the nursery? Its ours…………will you marry me forever?
And with a flourish he showed the palm of his hand holding a diamond ring.
