I saw one of the strangest sights this morning while I was having coffee with my husband, Artie, of forty plus years. We were talking about the usual--our health problems, our children and grandchildren, the passing of several dear friends or aquaintances, and the weather--, when, out of the orner of my eye, I saw a flash of white streak across the backyard.
At first, I dismissed it as a neighbor's dog or cat, but then I saw that it was neither: it was a squirrel, excepting it was pure white, as white as freshly-fallen snow.
I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me or that my medications were acting up again, making me see things that weren't even there, but when I shook my head and opened my eyes again, I realized that what I was looking at was not of my imagination. What I was looking at was real.
The squirrel scampered up the tree and skittered across our porch, to where we could get a good look at him (or was it a her??). He (or she) sat up on his (or her) haunches and stared at us through the glass with his huge, round eyes, which were pink. I am sure that somewhere in his tiny brain that he was probably wondering who (or what) we were, and he twitched his whiskers and flicked his huge, furry tail before bounding off in a sudden flash of white.
I sit here now in my favorite chair, and I can't help but to smile as I think about this little animal blessing us with his unusual presence. That little critter went totally against everything I thought I knew about squirrels. I didn't know that they could come in colors other than brown, red, or grey (or a combination of the three). It was one of the most amazing sights I had ever witnessed, and later on, when I call my family and friends, I will have to tell them about this little furry Miracle that I saw with my very own eyes!
One of the great blessings of nature, I believe, is that it presents us with small and large wonders to distract us from the pains and doubts of everyday living. Thank you for sharing the big open-hearted wonder of THE WHITE SQUIRREL.

We have lots of jet-black, redish-brown, brown, and grey squirrels in my area, but I've never seen an albino one! Thanks for sharing this delightful story of your sighting!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...precious, Karen! Almost as precious as our little purring visitor last night. Losing sleep was worth every joyful minute! Well done!
Fascinating, Karen - and also fascinating to me is the fact my wife spotted a jet black squirrel on our back porch just a few days ago - we had never seen a black squirrel around here, only brown and grey. And I would love seeing that adorable little white one, too. What a picture!
