I wrote this a few years ago but it is just as appropriate today.
I stand on a hill overlooking a wide valley. In this valley I see many things. I see tall buildings. I see streets. I see a dark cloud over the valley. I hear loud noises. I see streams running through the valley. The water is dirty. I see animals. big animals, little animals, skinny animals, wounded animals, dead animals. Beside the water I see trash, bottles, cans, dead fish, garbage.
As I stand on the hill, I feel distant, safe from all that I see. I realize that I'm searching for something, but I'm not sure what it is. After much thinking, I know that what I search for is truth, beauty and love. Above all, truth.
Looking back into the valley I see other things. I see masses of machinery, all adding to the confusion and noise. I see people, many, many people. Little children, many hungry. Large numbers of people sleeping on the streets. Angry, hurt people, may being beaten or killed. Almost everyone seems to be searching for something. Where is the beauty that man can create?
Suddenly, I hear a voice, "Help me!" I begin to fear that my spot for searching out the truth is being threatened. Then I hear the voice again, "Help me! This is not what I want." I look down and see a form coming up the hill. I can see it is another human being. My first instinct is to protect my place, not to allow another person close to me.
But then as the other person struggles to get to the top, I reach out my hand to help and realize that part of searching for the truth is finding others who are also searching.
As we stand there with our arms around each other we hear other voices and see others struggling to get up the hill. We slowly begin to understand that together, there is yet hope. Hope for others of our kind. That together, we can all achieve LOVE...PEACE...CREATIVITY... GOD!
