     The story continues
The day after the prowlers visit was a busy one for my Dad..He and my 2nd oldest brother went around the outside of the our house like men on a mission. They picked up a lot of cigarette butts that the Police had missed. Only one brand was smoked in our house, so any others outside by the windows or the fence gate had to belong to the prowler. In all they picked up, they had gloves on, about 63 cigarette butts, all the same brand, and not any of the brand smoked by my Mom or Dad. The butts were the same brand has the ones the Police had found during their search that night.
My Dad and brother also took down the wooden gate railing under the side porch bedroom window. My Mom also put up full length curtains in that bedroom, on all 3 windows out there..My parents also rearranged the furniture. My little sisters crib was moved from near the front window to a side wall and in the cribs place was a tall metal cabinet that had been against the side wall- The double bed was then put sideways against the other wall and the mirror dresser was arranged in front of the back window.
The big easy chair was then placed in front of the 3rd window with its high back directly in the middle of the window. The bedroom was well fortified to my parents liking.
After lunch my Dad went up to the Police Station with my Mom and the Police advised them of some additional information they did not want to let the kids at home hear. The police said that in their opinion the prowler was not looking to get into the house for the purpose of stealing cash, jewelry or anything like that. In their opinion he was more interested in the female in the house.
They said that they were sure it was someone who lived here on our street and knew everything about everybody living on the street. They said that a week ago, the woman and her husband who lived about 15 doors down from us had been getting ready for bed in an upstairs bedroom, and the husband was in the bathroom when he heard his wife yell for him..he came running out in time to see a figure on a ladder, who then jumped down on their roof. By the time the husband got part of the way out of their window the figure was running down the street, onto a side street. The wife called the police immediately. The police arrived within minutes, without their sirens or lights flashing, hoping to catch somebody running away. It was about 2am.
Upon investigation the police learned that the ladder belonged to the man who lived there, and had always been situated next to the back garage on a clamp. They found cigarette butts, and other DNA up on the roof top outside the bedroom window, which led them to believe what had happened was not the first time the prowler had been at their window. The man and woman both described the figure having slender build, about 25-30..leather coat, and someone who seemed to know where he was
going as he was running away. By the evidence gathered at a couple more calls on the next street over, the cigarette butts and the general description of the man seen were all the same.
The police were worried because the prowler, for some reason, seemed more intent on getting in our house, more than the other happenings. Especially with so many children living at home.
During the next week the police went to every house on the street and talked to the parents who had any teenage or older boys living at home. There were even some younger married couples that were also visited about this.
The police were not accusing anyone, but was letting everyone know just was going on close to home in the neighborhood. Some leads came from some of the different boys from different families. Of course by the police going to the various homes it made some people think my Mom and Dad had suspicions about their family.
So a couple of days later the police had a meeting for the public at the municipal building at the police station. There everyone aired their gripes or whatever else they had to say about the matter.
Bottom line was that after the meeting no one felt and ill will toward my parents, and the families knew that no one from our family had mentioned any of their family members as suspicious.
The next day, before going to work, my Dad nailed down all the windows in our house.
His parting words to my Mom were "it will take a crowbar to get those windows open"
