Life doesn't always run as smoothly as we would like - especially not when our to-do list is a mile-and-a-half long.
Did you ever have one of those Saturdays when everything seemed to take ten times as long to accomplish as it should? You generate a to-do list, prioritize the items on the list, and set out to tackle the most important: Get the lawnmower repaired, so you can tackle the lawn - uh, the field that used to be your lawn.
Uh-oh. They don't open until ten o'clock. Fine! You'll move to Item 2. Find a birthday present for your son. No small feat, for he makes enough to buy whatever he wants, but he doesn't want anything. The import store is open. Good! You find what you he surely will love - an engineering drawing of the Brooklyn Bridge. Perfect gift for an engineer. You buy it. Check that one off; mission accomplished.
On your way to accomplish Item 3, you see a turtle making its way across a busy street. Oh, no! Someone surely will run over the poor thing. So, you pull into a school parking lot, go rescue the turtle, and carry it to a flower bed in someone's back yard. Turtle safe. Mission accomplished - and it wasn't even on your list.
Back to Item 3. You find the window-washing fluid, so you can spray-wash the second-storey windows without breaking your neck (hopefully). Check!
Back to Item 1. It's now after ten o'clock. You go to see about repairing the lawnmower. Yes, they can do the work, but they're backed up and won't be able to have it ready for you for four to six weeks - until the summer is halfway over. You take the lawnmower home and set out to rent one to use until you figure out what you're going to do about the lawnmower.
Such has been my Saturday morning. I'm going to put on a good movie, prop up my feet, and sip a decaffeinated Diet Coke. I'll think about my to-do list later.
Ah, yes. The "to-do" list that seems to magically add to itself. One step up and two steps back, as they say. I'm feeling this one, Virginia, and smiling!
