An elderly woman and a little dog share a special relationship.

If it were not for my little friend, "Precious", my world would be a much sadder, darker place.

I live by myself in a retirement community, and I have very few friends. I am new here; just moved here to Florida from Mississippi not even a year ago. I am rather shy, and besides, it's hard for me to get around.

I have serious health problems, among them being diabetes that's cost me one of my legs (above the knee), high blood pressure, glaucoma in both my eyes, macular degeneration (I am nearly totally blind now; if I want to "read" I listen to my talking books, or I have someone read to me), arthritis, and poor circulation. Let's face it: I'm a medical mess.

I'm always having to go to the doctor's (or hospital) for one thing or another.

I have three children, all grown, but they hardly come to see me. I guess they're embarrassed by me or ashamed, I don't know; but I wish they'd give me a call or visit, just to let me know that they're thinkin' of me.

The phone stays silent. The only ones who call are telemarketers peddlin' their wares or sales people tryin' to sell me stuff. With my limited income, I can't afford such frivelous luxuries; if I have any money left over after payin' for my meds or my bills, I am lucky if I can eat.

I do have a special friend in my life, though--and she ain't even human. My little friend's name is "Precioius". She's a little Pomeranian, and ever since she came into my life, my life has been a lot brighter. She never fails to entertain me with her antics. I can sense when she's entertainin' me, and she brings a smile to my face, every time. She is such a joy to have. She has a sweet personality, and if there's somethin' afoot, she never fails to let me know that by barkin' up a storm.

She is very good at pertectin' me. She may be little in size, not even five pounds, but I swear she has pit-bull or Rottweiler in her: she has a tough little streak in her tiny little body!

I have had "Precious" now goin' on four months (I got her at the pound; a lady brought her over, and it was instant love), and she is the joy that brings me hope. She makes me laugh, and she lowers my blood pressure, which is good for my overall health (bad as it is). She loves to do tricks, and loves to make me laugh. She knows I am lonely, so she goes out of her way to make me happy.

Little "Precious" even saved my life once. About two months back I had a heart spell, had to go to the hospital in an ambulance and everything; but "Precious" alerted the paramedics to my front door by barkin' up a storm. She may have saved my life (as did the paramedics).

Ever since she and I have gotten to be real good friends. She is a joy to have around, and I wish everyone could have a chance to meet her. She is really special, and she's the best friend an old gal like me could ever have. She is a blessin' from Heaven, my little "Doggie-Angel".

Kaen, When children neglect their parents it makes me sad. This little old lady is a dear...so is her little dog. Yes, it seems pets and the elderly cheer each other up. Great write, as always.

Much love

A touching write. Many truly remarkable stories of how our little four legged friends have saved the life of us much more intellegent human beings. They are widely used now for seizures in children as well as heart attacks in their elderly companions. Lady J

My husband's grandmother had a little dog named Precious, it was her companion that saw her through many lonely days and nights. She too lived alone and family came daily, but there were many hours that she would've been alone if it hadn't been for Precious! Wonderful write, one that I can relate well with, enjoyed!

How Precious! Yes, pets are the most amazing company. They can change a person's life so much, especially the lonely, elderly people. It seems children forget they have parents these days and this story is a well written example of this fact. Very well stated!

Awwwwwww...Karen,

This. Is. Precious. Not just the dog, the story of a love that goes beyond borders, beyond age, beyond limitations. Unconditional love. Our four legged friends could teach the two leggeds a thing or two! Beautifully, heartwarmingly told. Well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
