Tottie Weatherspoon has a funny feeling about one of her nurses; she feels something is up with her. She also writes of the ongoing rehabilitation she is currently going through and the frustrations of not being able to return to her native Australia just yet.

Friday, 18 May, 2007, Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A., nearly 11 a.m.~

Dear Journal~

Tottie Weatherspoon here.

I had a rough few days in rehab: yesterday I tripped over me bloody sticks, and I fell, hurt me gam all to hell. It bloody hurts!! Today I had more physsie therapy, not easy to do with a bum leg! *OW* The pain is enough to  make me sick!

It is all I can do to keep from doing a technicoloured yawn all over the where!

Today me nurse Louie Sandusky came for a social call. I can't put me finger on it, but something is not right with her. She looks like she doesn't feel good; she was rather pale, paler than I've seen her. It has me worried. She assured me she was fine, but I don't know. She'd better have a doc look at her, to make sure it isn't anything more serious.

Guess I am going to have to do a little meddling; I'd like to know what is going on with her...

Lunches here are getting a little more tolerable. I have found myself liking the hamburgers and chips, also the fizzy drinks. YUM!! Better than the nose hose I had a while back; there's NO way on God's green earth that I am getting that thing back in me nose; that nose hose was NASTY!!

Never thought in all me born days I'd end up liking HOSPITAL FOOD! Guess I'm sicker than I first thought...LOL

I am still missin' me chums, me family, me Aussie home. I wonder if Australia has had any needed rain; they are in a terrible drought, no rain for months, fires burnin' up the bush, the Aussie countryside, homes being destroyed, animals and people being killed...scary times there! This is when I worry most about me family, me mum and pop, me chums. I pray they are okay...

If something were to happen to them, I don't know what I'd do. Oh, I gotta' get out of this prison SOON, return home to Australia! I don't like it here; I want to go back home so bloody bad, I can't STAND it much longer!!

The weather here is nice today, pleasantly cool, with temps in the 60's and 70's. Patchy skies, I am sure it feels good on the skin. Yet here I be, trapped in hospital, in rehab, undergoing more bloody therapy! I am so sick of therapy I could just SCREAM!!! ARRRRGGGH!!!!

Oops. I did scream; a nursie just poked her blonde head into my room, asked if I was okay. I told her no, I was sick of this bloody place, I am sick of goddamn therapy, sick of hospital garbage, sick of...well, just SICK of it all!! I am about to go mad with boredom! The only exciting times in my life right now concern therapy; that's the only time I get to do anything! Any other time, I am stuck in me bed, bored to tears!!

I guess I must be feelin' better; actin' all mean and shit, actin' like a wounded tiger. I must be, why else would I be acting like a spoilt child?? Well, can ye blame me? I lost me leg, I am having to learn to walk again, me bloody stump hurts to beat the band, and I have to eat crappy hospital food that tastes like mud! (Not really, but at least I can stomach the hamburgers, aalad, and chips! That's progress!)

Anything else, and I stand a chance of ralphing everywhre, and the nursies won't be none too happy with me. *giggle*

Well, before physsie therapy bugs me again, I am going to try to get some shut eye, try to get me mind off me nausea. I will write in here another time; hopefully the next time I write I'll have an idea as to WHEN I am getting out of this prison!!

When I do, then it's goodbye Yankee Town, and G'Day, Australia!! My home!! O, I am looking so forward to it; I miss me Home in Oz!!

Until next time, this is Tottie saying Toodles!

Interesting...obviously, Karen can build interesting characters. I know this is an extract from a journal, so it's difficult to comment without reading within the broader context of the work. I don't know how many Australians have this inflexion, as I deal with them every day and this seems a touch exaggerated.
As it stands though I'd like a little more natural language giving the flavor of the environment. Write on Karen...you've got something.

Karen,

At least Tottie has a sense of humor about her: a lot of anger, but learning to accept the situation. :) Well done, look forward to more from Ms. Weatherspoon. :)

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
