To what would you say to a forgotten American Hero?
"Thank you for all you've done"? or "I'm sorry that it was all in vain"?
To many he no longer exists; to most it was that he never existed at all.
Don't you find it amazing that for 35 years one man stood for so much? People respected him and understood his motives and reasonings for his actions. He held strong to his firm beliefs that good can truly triumph over evil.
Die Welt and Corriere Della Sera said it best:
"Perhaps with him there is ended a certain America: that of the frontier and of innocence which had or was believed to have an exact sense of the dividing line between good and evil. Gary Cooper was the symbol of trust, confidence and protection. He is dead now. What a miracle that he existed."
Don't you find it sad that it was all so easily forgotten?
For America, he is only but like a thousand others - a man in the past, washed away by history and given the title "dead". But should that mean what he stood for dies along side him; and must it remain?
To me he is Gary Cooper. My hero and angel in leather.
Soon memory will have no claim on him; it will belong entirely to that other dream they call 'history'.
So with this I shall end my greivances; not for the loss of a hero, but I must come to the realization that an American Hero is gone forever; his memory lingers no more and his strong words of wisdom fell to the ground and was burried along side his body.
"It's finished, Gary Cooper. Finished forever. Finished, the quiet American, sure of himself and of his rightness, who fights the bad guys, is always for the good cause, makes justice triumph and always wins in the end. Goodbye American certitudes. Now, it's Vietnam, the exploding universities, the black ghettoes. ciao, Gary Cooper."
