One day her man went to work and never came back.
A bomb they said, a cruel and evil terrorist thing.
Jenny — 1974–2006
Jenny came to the city looking for work and work she found and a fine husband too, a decent god fearing man full of laughter and song with a smile on him like the sun’s own face shining through.
Jenny said she had never been so happy, she said you just want to laugh and sing and feel your heart go thumty thump when you see your man come walking in.
Every Sunday morning Jenny walked down the road to St Andrews. She sang hymns and knelt in prayer, she thanked god for granting her such bliss and sometimes when she thought on it she just couldn’t hardly believe it was real, that such happiness existed to be found.

Cloud castles pile up in the sky, swallows flit and dive, somewhere a thrush is singing. Leaves fall from the trees. A small, damp wind tumbles them along. The loamy smell of fresh turned earth and crushed grass tangs the air. The sun goes down behind a drift of charcoal long shadows slant down through the trees. The wind picks up, brisk and chill in the fading light.
Jenny stands alone with an ache in her heart only God can know. Tears glisten in the gloom. “Oh my love,” she sobs brokenly, “what am I to do. I’m standing here shiverin’ don’t you know because I just can’t bear to go, to walk away and leave you. I can’t believe I’ll never see you again never hear you laugh and sing. It’s here my man sleeps in the cold ground and I’ve got to go on living without him, how do I face each day alone? Sweet Jesus, Mary and Joseph give me strength because I’m not sure I can face it alone now my laughing man has gone.”
Jenny turned away into the gloom then suddenly she threw back her head and cried out in a terrible wailing voice, “God curse all yee evil, senseless men,” she sobbed, “you took my laughing man and my life away.”
Jenny has gone where her laughing man waits in sunshine and grace in God’s warm forgiving embrace.
Jenny has gone.
