Bill is estatic: his wife, Louisiana, has had her twins a month early. Much to everyone's surprise, the boys are healthy.
If there is any day or reason to give thanks, it is today. Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, 2007. We have been truly blessed, in more ways than you can even imagine!
I am at my sleeping wife's bedside here in the maternity ward at Nashville Memorial Hospital. Just two hours ago, we became new parents to twin baby boys. Yes, Ian Charles and Isaiah Cameron are here--a month early, but both bursting with good health, and both weighing five pounds each at birth.
It is nothing but a miracle!
Louie started having stomach problems this morning, before we went out to eat. We just assumed it was gas pains or severe indigestion; she gave no indication that she was even in labor. She just knew she felt lousy, and after she picked at her food, she said that the pains got worse. She looked mighty uncomfortable, so that's when we took her to the emergency room.
We put her into her wheelchair, where we took her to the admitting table. The lady took one look at her and said: "Labor and delivery. She's in labor". I was like: "WHAT??" I couldn't believe it! The twins were getting ready to rumble their way out of their mamma's tummy, and mamma gave us no sign that she was even IN labor!!
An orderly rushed Louie to L & D; we followed close behind. I guess we must have sounded like a whole herd of elephants; people kept staring at us or kept givng us dirty looks. The orderly then said, "Wait out here", to the family while he beckoned me to follow him. I did.
I stayed with Louie as she was prepped for delivery of the twins. EKG leads were affixed to her chest, nasal prongs were placed into her nostrils, and an I.V. was started into one hand. She was in a lot of pain and discomfort; it really worried me. She squeezed my hand tightly, she did not want me to leave her side for a moment.
The delivery took about fifteen minutes at the most. First Ian Charles presented himself into the world with a lusty cry. Then the atmosphere in the room grew tense when Ian went silent; it unnerved us, especially when the alarms started sounding. The baby stopped breathing; yet the medical team got him back almost immediately. Then about five minutes later, little Isaiah Cameron emerged, crying his lungs out. His cries deafened me; it was surprising how such a tiny baby could produce so much noise.
The boys were beautiful. They looked like their mamma, but they were long; I knew that they were probably going to take after me in height. They had to be over two and a half feet long in length easy. They both had a headful of fuzzy black hair that stuck straight up and huge grey eyes (that is, when they had their eyes open; if they did, it was only for brief periods). They were perfect: no signs of defects or disability. They both burst with health.
At the sight of the twins, our new sons, both Louie and I burst into tears. It was more than we caould have ever imagined. Now we had sixty three children of our own; it was an unexpected Thanksgiving blessing, or more importantly, an early Christmas present from God.
It was just another reminder of how God had blessed our family throughout the years. Yes, we truly have enough reasons to be thankful this year; it was a perfect ending to a wonderful year in our lives!
On that note, let me take the time to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving! Hope it was as good as mine was!
