This was one of the funniest rumors I can remember as I think of yesterday.
Boy rumors sure can take on a life of their own. Someone gets one started and it spreads like air freshener. Just one squirt and its air borne.
Some on the best rumors I can recall occured during my Jr. High through High school years.
The best rumor blew into our church on bright sunny Sunday morning with a full congregation. Our regular service opened with the morning devotion. The deacons it started by singing one of those old familiar hymns - What A Fellowship. After a prayer and another song, the young adult choir began marching in through the side door in their blue and white robes. Boy were they singing and clapping and swaying all the way into the choirstand . When they were all in the choirstand the director motioned form them to be seated.
During this time the preacher had entered the pulpit. The deacons had taken their seats in the deacon's corner. It was time for the announcements to be read over the intercom by Sister McCaskill . Just after the last announcement , Deacon Harvey began to flag the preacher trying to quickly get his attention before he continued. The preacher called for Deacon Harvey to stand and speak.
"Maybe you haven't heard it yet but, Sister Carrie passed at her home. So I was told a few minutes ago by one of the members."
"We ask for your prayers for the family", Deacon Harvey concluded as he slowly sat down on the pews.
A slew of gasps, whispers, and sniffles began to make their way all across the church. The preacher rose and thanked the deacon. He asked for another selection by the choir. As the choir stood and began to sing, the ushers opened the front door of the church. Everyone watched that door to see who was coming in so that they could, you know, WHISPER,WHISPER, WHISPER.
After a couple of folks walk in, in steps none other than who - Sister Carrie in the flesh. She wore her usual gigantic gold glittering Sunday hat along with her matching two-piece suit. She also had the matching purse and shoes. She made her way down the aisles and sat on the front pew. She had a big smile on her face and a song on her lips.
Everyone looked at each other for about 10 seconds then the majority of the congregation let go the loudest laugh they had ever made inside the church doors. Poor Sister Carrie just laughed in because she didn't have a clue about what was going on.
I my self found it mighty hard to keep my mind on God's work and off of the majority of the choir members who were passing kleenexes and wiping their eyes. They all looked like someone had taken their funnybones and tickled it with a feather. Half of the congregation looked like they were being revived from fainting. It was hard to sing like this. We cut the song short and sat down quickly.
What a rumor! It took a rumor like that to wake u the sleepy congregation at that Sunday morning service.
