The little Mexican boy with cancer is not doing very well; he is clearly on his way to checking out. Understandably, everyone involved in his care is visibly upset.

I don't know how he keeps doing this--defying one odd after another. Yet he still remains, and we are left, shaking our heads in wonder.

Perfecto Jiminez was supposed to have died long ago; yet two months later, his heart still beats, he still lies in a hospital bed, valiantly fighting for life.

I do think, however, that Perfecto is clearly on his way to checking out--permanently. His vital signs are becoming increasingly irratic, he's spending fewer hours awake, and his color is poor. He is not doing very well at all at the moment, and it bothers us.

A little boy his age should be running around, playing, shouting, having fun, not lying unconscious in a hospital bed, hooked up to a whole bank of tubes and monitors, while medications drip into his emaciated body. It doesn't seem fair; the little guy  has already suffered so much now.

His parents, Rico and Maria, have faithfully been at their little boy's bedside, praying aloud to God, asking Him to spare him; they look old, beaten. It breaks my heart. No matter what we try to tell them, they refuse to give up hope. I've never seen such strong faith!

I feel bad for Rico and Maria: Perfecto is their only child; what they must be going through is incredible to even think about. I don't think I could do it. I have a daughter, Morgan Brittany, and if she were in Perfecto's situation--oh, it's too horrible to even think about!!

Rico, Maria, and Perfecto aren't even from here: they are from Mexico. They were on vacation when their son took sick. Started experiencing visual disturbances, problems with balance, blinding headaches. When admitted to the hospital here in Nashville, the little guy underwent a whole battery of tests; an MRI revealed a mass in the boy's brain. Surgery revealed even more terrible news: cancer.

The cancer's since spread: it's riddled his whole body--liver, bones, lungs, stomach. The little boy is desperately sick; no matter what we do, the cancer won't go away. It clings to him like a leech; I've never seen such an aggressive form of cancer! It's enough to break even the strongest of hearts!

As you can imagine, Maria and Rico are devastated.

The parents don't speak English. Not one word. Therefore, we've had to learn Spanish. It's getting to the point to where we can communicate (fairly) well; yet whether in English or Spanish, the news is the same: all bad.

Anyway, Perfecto is in great pain: his young face grimaces as pain knifes theough his body; medications give him the needed peace; yet I wonder if it will completely erase it. What the kid is going through shouldn't even happen to a dog; the kid is in agony!

If Perfecto Jiminez survives even the day I'll be surprised. He's tried to go on us before, yet like his parents, little Perfecto possesses a fighting spirit that's nothing short of incredible. Maybe there's something going on that cannot be explained; I don't know; however, the way he's hung on has been extraordinary.

Of course, we'll probably cry when Perfecto does pass away; any child's death does. Yet we've accepted the fact that death is a part of life, so we must learn to deal with it, come to terms with it when it does happen. No, it isn't fair when death claims a child; yet maybe in some cases it's for the best.

It may very well be for Perfecto Jiminez. The little guy's already been through hell; he needs some relief!

The specter of a flat line is what parents don't deserve to have hanging over their hearts, then...we most accept that God have His own plan for the child, which one? for He to know and we to wonder, but keep on praying, maybe that's the plan.
